A2 vs SiteGround – Battle of the Web Hosts
2019 September 26th at 9:46
A2 Hosting and SiteGround are the two giant hosting providers with very similar services. Both offer shared, VPS and dedicated hosting server architectures.
However, there are some significant differences between the two.
Let's compare some of the main features and differences to find out which is better for you.
A2 Hosting - Eco-Friendly Web Hosting
Previously known as Iniquinet, A2 Hosting has been around in one form or another since 2001. In that time it has established a reputation as a reliable web hosting provider.
A2 Hosting offers over 300 1-click installation applications with each and every hosting package. This is also an eco-friendly web host. So much so that it offsets all the energy used in its data centers with donations to the Carbon Fund.
SiteGround - A Commitment To Customer Service
SiteGround was founded in 2004 by a group of Bulgarian students. Its come a long way since then and now provides hosting for over half a million unique domains.
Like A2 Hosting, it offers a large array of server types. This service stands out from the competition thanks to an impressive commitment to customer service. It operates a no wait time phone policy, so you can talk to a representative immediately.
A2 vs SiteGround Extra Services
Both A2 Hosting and SiteGround are feature-packed and offer numerous server types including Shared, VPS, and Dedicated hosting.
However, A2 goes the extra mile with other services such as resellers and CRM hosting. This means that you have more options to expand your business online and do it more fluently.
It also includes support for a tonne of different programming languages. Those features won't matter much to the everyday consumer. However, for advanced users, all the flexibility will mean a lot.
On the other hand, what SiteGround lacks in programming language support, it makes up for with stellar customer service. Its service agents will also help you to migrate your website to its servers for free.
Plus, SiteGround's Managed WordPress and Managed WooCommerce packages will ensure first-time website owners get technical help tailored to their particular CMS platform.
SiteGround and A2 both have an extensive list of services that they can offer you. Including Reseller, Shared, VPS, and CRM hosting.
A2 vs SiteGround Hosting Features
Shared hosting is, of course, not the only web hosting format offered by these companies. However, in this A2 Hosting vs SiteGround review, I'll focus on their entry-level shared hosting packages, as these will be the most relevant to consumers.
When it comes to price, both hosts are affordable, though they aren't as cheap as budget competitors like Hostinger. But, that said, A2 Hosting offers significantly better value because its plans come with unlimited storage.
It also gives that storage in fast solid-state drives, allows you unlimited transfer, 4 servers locations, and is eco-friendly. But note, that it tries to upsell a lot of other features during the purchase process.
SiteGround does things a bit differently, and they only have one extra feature to choose when buying - SG Site Scanner. But, it's base package is far more restrictive with just 10GB storage.
But the one absolutely great thing that neither web host limits monthly bandwidth. Meaning you can get as many visitors to your website as you can attract.
Essentially, A2 Hosting is the better option if you've got a large amount of content to share. SiteGround's storage space limit makes it better for small to medium-sized websites.
A2 vs SiteGround Pricing
Both A2 and SiteGround offer similar pricing plans, starting at $2.96/mo and $3.95/mo respectively. However, the most expensive plan at A2 is only $6.36 a month and offers unlimited storage space. While for $11.95/mo SiteGround gives you a maximum of 30 GB.
But don't forget that this price is for the first purchase, and the price goes up by a bit after that. With A2 the price goes up to $7.99 a month for the Lite plan. And with SiteGround it skyrockets to $34.95/mo, which is quite expensive for what you get.
We made a table containing all the important information about the cheapest plans with both providers.
|A2 Hosting 'Lite' Plan||SiteGround 'Startup' Plan|
|No. of Domains||1||1|
|HDD or SSD||SSD||SSD|
|Website Builder||A2, Elementor, Microweber||Weebly|
|Customer Support||24/7 Live Chat, Tickets and Skype||24/7 Live Chat, Tickets and Phone|
|Money-Back Guarantee||Anytime Cancellation||30-Day Period|
Except for storage, which we've already discussed, these hosts are for the most part equal in terms of features. Both offer well-rounded packages, and neither is missing important options like SSL certificates.
However, SiteGround also includes a Cloudflare Content Delivery Network (CDN) and a choice of multiple international data centers.
You can count on 24/7 customer support from both of these providers. You can get help by phone, email, or live chat. But with A2 you get 15 support numbers all around the world.
Furthermore, it's worth noting that A2 Hosting offers voice support through a free to call Skype number, rather than over the phone like SiteGround. If you live abroad or travel regularly, this is an excellent feature.
SiteGround offers an adequately long 30-day money-back guarantee, but it's no match for A2's anytime refund offer. You can get a full refund after 30 days or get a prorated refund anytime you think, even after 10 years.
In short, both providers have very similar feature-rich hosting plans. And while A2 hosting is a bit cheaper, the SiteGround's free CDN makes it worth your consideration.
A2 vs SiteGround Site-Building Experience
Both providers have website builders, SiteGround has partnered with the Weebly website builder. A2 has its own website builder that allows Drag-n-Drop features, but it's not as extensive as Weebly. The worst thing about the A2 builder is that you have to pay for it if you want the full features.
Both hosts are compatible with common CMS systems like WordPress, Drupal, and Joomla. So, if you feel like you want to do more technical work and have more control you can easily switch to CMS.
If you read my Weebly review, you'll know that this is an extremely user-friendly drag-and-drop website builder. While not as flexible as competitors such as Wix, Weebly comes with some great looking templates and full support for eCommerce stores.
With A2 Website builder you are much more limited, it has just a small selection of templates. While for the most parts it works just like any other Drag-n-Drop builder, most functions are a bit bare. But A2 allows you to use other builders if you want, both Elementor and Microweber are available.
But the fact, that you have to pay extra for more advanced features means that this isn't the best option. And have you seen the prices? $12 a month for just the builder is super expensive.
Both of these providers have website builder, but with A2 hosting you have to pay for extra features when using it. SiteGround in this regard has a powerful and cost-free Weebly website builder.
A2 vs SiteGround Performance
Both providers offer 99.9% uptime guarantees. And both of them deliver on that promise, giving you stability and speed. And while A2 hosting is a bit faster in the USA, SiteGround offers a more stable speed over all regions.
We can see our A2 hosting website results from UptimeRobot.
We didn't experience any downtime while testing with A2, so what about SiteGround?
Both providers showed 100% uptime. Giving us no downtime whatsoever throughout the entire review period.
In our SiteGround review, response times dropped as low as 81ms. We decided to test its speed again.
It showed similar results as before, the loading time was as low as 97ms in the USA. SiteGround showed great results in every region, giving it an A+ score for performance. It also has 4 server locations - 1 in the USA, 2 in Europe, and 1 in Asia.
Meanwhile, in my A2 Hosting review, speeds got down to 23ms. To casual visitors, a speed difference of 60ms won't be noticeable, but it's still worth looking into. So we decided to test our new site again.
And in the USA it showed great results, the speed went down to 11ms. In other regions, the load time was a bit worse, but we did host our website on the A2 USA server. They have 4 servers - 2 in the USA, 1 in Europe and 1 in Asia - so you can choose where you need the website to load faster.
It's worth noting that A2 Hosting does offer a 'turbo' package which can help your website load up to 20x faster. For most consumers, it will be too expensive to consider though, with Turbo plans starting at $7.03/month.
But if speed is important to you it's great that it offers you a choice to go faster.
Both will give you great stability and lightning-fast speeds. A2 has more choices when it comes to server locations and speed, but SiteGround has a solid performance throughout the world.
A2 vs SiteGround Conclusion
One conclusion that we can make after A2 vs SiteGround review - these are both excellent web hosts, and you won't be let down by either.
A2 Hosting is:
Better for technical users thanks to its support for lesser-known programming languages, unlimited storage space, and free SSL.
A user-friendly website builder that has excellent customer support, free CDN, and unlimited email addresses.
But what do you think of these two web hosting giants?
