LemonStand is a Canadian eCommerce platform. It was founded in 2010 and, despite growing rapidly, only boasts around 2,000 customers.
In short, it's not on the same level as other great eCommerce platforms, such as WooCommerce, Shopify, or Magento. And maybe that's why, sadly, it was just announced that this eCommerce solution is shutting down for good.
However, currently, it still provides a service. So should LemonStand be consigned to the minor leagues, or is this a diamond that's leaving us too soon?
Let's have a look.
What is LemonStand?
LemonStand was originally launched as a software-only package but now offers an all-inclusive eCommerce hosting service.
A key differentiator between LemonStand and its competitors is that you can modify LemonStand software. This customizability lets you tailor your LemonStand eCommerce store to your business needs.
However, editing LemonStand isn’t easy and requires some coding knowledge. Unless you have a web developer on your team, this probably isn’t the platform for you.
LemonStand Review: First Impressions
In-depth customization is tricky but actually setting up a store and adding products is quite simple. The LemonStand dashboard is intuitive to get around with all important links located in the left-hand sidebar.
The user-friendliness continues with the LemonStand CMS editor. It uses a What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) design so you can preview how pages will appear. Viewing your financial progress is easy too, with a functional analytics page.
Tons of Features
For a small company, LemonStand comes with an impressive feature list:
- Mobile-optimized store pages
- Command-line theme creator
- Support for unlimited products
- Coupon codes
- Automatic inventory manager
- Modifiable checkout
All in all, it has everything needed to create a working online store.
There are four different pricing tiers:
- Starter package: $19/month
- Growth package: $69/month
- Professional package: $199/month
- Premium package: $399/month
Each includes the same core features, but they all support a different number of monthly orders. The Professional and Premium plans also come with better support:
|Support||Priority Email||Priority Phone|
|Save Credit Card Info||No||No||No||Yes|
|Custom Email Domain||No||No||No||Yes|
Overall, LemonStand's pricing isn't great. The 75 order/month starter plan order limit means it isn't suitable for most businesses. It's also disappointing that LemonStand isn't able to offer phone support with the $199/month Professional plan.
One upside is the total lack of transaction fees though.
During my LemonStand review, I tested my site's performance with Bitcatcha. Results were acceptable; customers shouldn't have problems viewing your products. However, the response times are nothing to brag about.
LemonStand vs Shopify
When comparing Lemonstand with Shopify, customization is the key difference. Shopify is more of a closed system that won't let you change every site element. The flipside is that Shopify is also more beginner-friendly.
When it comes to pricing, although monthly Shopify prices are generally cheaper, it does charge transaction fees. For businesses with large revenues, this makes Shopify more expensive.
Shopify is also significantly more popular and has a more active development community. Additionally, it's easier to find apps that add extra functions to your store.
Is it a good platform to migrate to when LemonStand shuts down? It is a decent choice. For more personally tailored options, read my blog post on the best eCommerce solutions.
LemonStand Review: A Sad Goodbye
Overall, LemonStand is an impressive piece of software that lets you create functional digital stores. Unfortunately, it's let down by prices that aren't affordable for smaller businesses. It's also not the best choice if you aren't particularly tech-savvy.
However, it will be sad to see the platform go. While it has its downsides, it is a powerful tool that would benefit many businesses. And it would've been interesting to see it improve.
