Best Free Website Builder – Amazing Websites, Without Charge!

Free website builders help you to create amazing things – without paying a penny.

Website builders, in general, are amazing. They allow people with no coding or web design knowledge to make beautiful and functional pages. However, often they tend to cost money. And often, quite a lot

Which is what makes free website builders so brilliant. They’re both amazing – and free!

Here are the 5 very best free website builder options on the market today:

  • Weebly (combines code and drag-and-drop!)
  • Wix (has an artificial-intelligence website creator)
  • Voog (fully-built for multilanguage websites)
  • WordPress (perfect for aspiring developers)
  • Site123 (combines plenty of pre-made pages)

1. Weebly

free website buildersFree and flexible

Speed: Unavailable Uptime: Unavailable

Weebly is a fantastic website builder. It could easily have topped our best website builders page if its main competitor, Wix, wasn’t so good in pretty much everything.

Where Weebly shines, however, is in its free-forever plan. And also superb performance as well as massive amounts of flexibility.

Drag-and-drop or coding?

Weebly offers many beautiful templates, and for most users, this is all they’ll ever need. You can drag and drop various elements to a great theme and have the kind of website you want.

However – some users may want to do some code! If you’re one of them, there’s no better website builder for you than Weebly. In there, you’ll find an extensive code editor fit for all sorts of customization.

You can edit both the HTML and CSS source codes in your new site. And that’s not just for the home page, that’s for every page and every element within it. If you have the knowledge, or determination to learn, Weebly will give you a perfect sandbox to play in and make a beautiful site.

Fantastic speed

Despite being primarily aimed at ease-of-use and beautiful design, Weebly still knows that speed is king. A fast website is a good website – it makes the browsing experience so much better for everyone.

Weebly is making things very good – with speeds of around 300ms and uptime stats of almost 100%, it’s our undisputed champion of performance.

These kinds of stats would be at the top end for web hosts, let alone free website builders!

If you can live with a small ribbon on your page saying, that it was created with Weebly, this is a very good website builder. It’s perfect for playing around with code and building things: which will be…

Great performance
A lot of great features require upgrading to a paid plan
Easy-to-use code editor
Paid plans quite cheap (start at $4/month)

2. Wix

free website buildersFast and helpful

Speed: 289ms Uptime: 100%

If you want a free website builder that can do a bit of everything, Wix is one of the best options out there.

With hundreds of stunning templates, you’ll be spoiled for choice with Wix when it comes to beautiful designs.

It may be our number 1 rated website builder overall, but Wix falls to second place in the list of the best free builders for one simple reason:

With Weebly and all other free website builders, there are bound to be adverts, it’s how these companies let people know that your site is built with them. It also is a good way for them to get customers to upgrade to paid plans, as nobody wants ads all over their site.

Wix, unfortunately, has a very big ribbon showing everyone which platform was the page built on. For some, it may be a dealbreaker.

Luckily, there are still some amazing things that Wix has going for it.

Artificial Intelligence (ADI)

Wix’s Artificial Design Intelligence (ADI, in short) is an incredibly powerful and useful feature. It may be taking a lot of “creative fun” away – but it makes building a website very, very simple. Even the color palette of your page will be automatically selected and applied based on the logo you upload.

With the help of advanced Artificial Intelligence, making websites with Wix is very easy. And what’s best, is that you can easily try this out for free.

Apps everywhere

Wix has an extensive app store. It’s by far the biggest of all the website builders I’ve tested, free or otherwise. Everything is separated into different categories, making it simple to find and install exactly what you want.

From SEO optimization to mailing forms or blogging assistants, everything to help your online journey is here.

ADI Website builder is awesome
Plenty of advertising on the free plan
Beautiful templates
Lack of code editing options
Very exciting app store

3. Voog

free website buildersEasy-to-use and beautiful

Speed: Unavailable Uptime: Unavailable

Voog is a wildcard – different and exciting enough to separate itself from the crowd. Coming from the modern-thinking European nation of Estonia, Voog is one of the most interesting new website builders out there.

Of course, an elephant in the room has to be addressed at first. There’s no free forever plan here. With a 30-day free trial on offer, Voog hopes that after you’ve given it a thorough try you will upgrade to one of their paid plans.

That being said, prices are very competitive, so it’s a good choice for those on a budget. For just $7/month you can create a site with up to 30 pages and sell online.

Voog places a large amount of stock on languages. You can add languages to each site with ease, and you have many options regarding how these languages are shown.

For example, if you have a home page that you want to display in two different languages, you can simply head to settings and select the two. From there, you have the option to either clone the existing page into the new language, or make it totally different.

On top of that, Voog has the capability to automatically show a selected language to site visitors, depending on their location! If you expect your visitors to come from several different locations, Voog is a brilliant choice.

Developer friendly

Voog provides a powerful and easily customizable website building platform. However, if you wish to get your hands dirty and do some coding, Voog is more than happy to help.

We also provide powerful tools for developers with which they can build websites with any kind of design and functionality.

You can edit each template’s HTML and CSS source code, to truly perfect your site to your liking. Very similar to Wix!

Fully multilingual
Lack of a fully free plan
Source code editable
Website speed not great

The most popular CMS in the world

Speed: Unavailable Uptime: Unavailable

Created in 2005, hosts nearly a third of the sites you see on the internet.

Just to clear up some confusion – and are actually two different things. provides an open-source content management system (CMS) which still needs its server space in order to be used. WordPress is available to download for free when purchasing a web hosting plan.

On the other hand,, showed here, also provides a free server. On their page, you can use this platform without paying money for web hosting!

And while this CMS isn’t your regular website builder, it’s still a very good option – thanks to the community-made free templates, complex editing options and thousands of plug-ins. It’s a bit of a learning curve, but it’s the most editable and powerful option on this list.

Backups and protection

Website security and backups are really important. That’s why WordPress takes them both very seriously. Every free account with WordPress comes with built in automated backups and free built-in spam protection.

Plug-ins galore

If you aren’t quite happy with what stock WordPress offers, you’re in luck! With over 55,000 plugins available, some paid, some free, you are spoiled for choice when it comes to customization.

Want a caching app to improve site loading speed? There’s a plugin for that. Want a simple way to make sure your site is SEO optimized? There’s a plugin for that too. There are plugins for things you didn’t even think you need!

Want a plugin which enables Clippy, a virtual assistant from the old versions of Windows, right on your dashboard?

There’s a plugin for that, too.

Thousands of plugins
Considerably more difficult to use
Extensive community knowledgebase
 No in-built drag-and-drop tools
Fully free plan

5. Site123

As simple as it gets

Speed: Unavailable Uptime: Unavailable

Site123 values simplicity over everything else. And this is precisely what makes this such an interesting simple website builder option.

With a helpful 24/7 chat support available at all times and loads of page options to choose from, Site123 is perhaps the most comfortable page building experience – even for complete novices. A free forever website builder plan is available, and an upgrade to a $9.80 premium plan is very simple.

Pre-made pages

Website builders are already often made for people who don’t know how or want to code. Site123 goes a step further and helps the people who have no idea how to do website design as well.

There are 14 separate page categories, each including dozens of special-tailored pages you can combine together. I’ve often said that building a page with a website builder is like using Lego blocks. Here, it’s even closer to that. If you don’t feel like designing is your strong suit, definitely have a look at Site123 as a great free website builder option.

Great speed

But it’s not only simplicity that makes Site123 good. Is also its speed. Site123 averages a response time of around 300 ms. That sets it side-to-side with Weebly, a website builder I’ve previously praised for performance, matching premium web hosts.

And this is a free website builder!

 Great ease of use
 Lack of customization options
Fantastic speed
Support is lacking
 Live chat support

What makes these free website builders the best?

Even though I have all these free website builders ranked from 1 to 5 – all of them are actually really good.

What makes those builders the best is the fact they’re different. One builder may be perfect for you, but almost useless for a separate kind of user!

For example, this very website, and perhaps dozens of other websites that I’ve published in, use WordPress. It’s brilliantly customizable, has loads of great themes and plugins. If something goes wrong, there’s a big community of enthusiasts always willing to help and/or call you an idiot.

But I’ve used Weebly as well. I loved it, too – just for completely different reasons. Immediately fell with its templates and the fact you could put some code in them! Then found Wix and its artificial intelligence. Another builder, another thing I loved about it!

What makes these 5 builders the best, is that each of them have something great about them. Be it, performance, code-friendliness, templates, or something else – they’re all very different and suitable for various kinds of users.

WordPress may be “too complicated” for some, and they would love Site123. But guess what, no seasoned WordPress developer would say that Site123 is better! And so on, and so on…

And of course, there’s one more thing to consider – money. The best free website builder in this list might not be the best website builder in the world. Simple example – Weebly here is #1.

But it’s #2 on our list of the best website builders. Why?

Because it’s a great website builder but not the best, where money is concerned…And if you really want to make a great website for your business, it may be wiser to actually pay for what you use. Because free website builders are still not ideal.

Free website builders have their drawbacks

Before jumping into a free website builder of your choice, it’s important to know that you still won’t get the full experience. A free plan won’t have all the full and amazing features that a top web professional wants and needs.

Let’s break it down.

Your domain name. Well, it’s not going to be purely yours on a free plan.

You’ll be given a subdomain. This is usually coming before the main domain name.

So if your site should be called ‘hostingreview’ , with something like WordPress’ free plan you’ll actually end up with

This could possibly be a downside for your customers, as using these subdomains seems to make things look less professional.

I am yet to find a single website builder which, on its free plan, allows you to connect your own domain name. Most of these builders allow you to connect your own domain, but it’s going to cost you! Usually, it’s not much. Around 4-5 dollars a month if you’re using Wix or Weebly.

Also, you’ll get less resources. A number of pages you can make, disk space and bandwidth tend to be limited on free versions of website builders. Maintaining servers cost companies a lot of money, you won’t get unlimited everything for free.

Free website builder comparison

The 5 website builders you see featured here are definitely my favorites. Weebly takes the prize of best free builder due to its beautiful templates, great performance and forever free plan. The others are all pretty close behind, but Weebly has so much going on for it, it’s impossible to ignore.

As I mentioned earlier, however, your winner may be different. Easy-to-use, beautifully designed and usually with performance to match, all of these free website builders are fantastic options for any beginner who is aiming to get their journey into the online world started. Naturally, whilst saving some money too!

Interested to know the public opinion of which website builder is the most popular? Let’s see what the users look for the most.

As you see from the Google Trends chart above, WordPress is still by far and away the most popular of them all. Considering it powers one third of the world’s internet, that’s no surprise.

However, website builders like Weebly and especially Wix aren’t far behind and the gap is closing! So who knows, maybe in the future, it will be website builders, which will have the most pages on the Internet? I guess we’ll see in the future.

What do you think? Are the free website builders worth it? And are they going to fully replace something more complex, like WordPress? Tell us in the comments section below, both about this and your experiences with free website builders. We would love to hear from you!
