101domain company was registered in 2007 and since then it is committed to redefine the hosting services market by providing the best domain registration experience with low prices and fantastic support.
Within this period it has provided domain name solutions for tens of thousands of customers.
In this 101domain review, we’ll give you all the information you need to make the best choice.
What Is 101domain?
101domain is primarily a domain registration provider, however, it also dabbles in hosting and other services. The packages include options that are excellent for personal and business purposes. Listed below are some of those services:
- Domain Registration
- Shared Hosting
- Email Services and G Suite
- SSL Certificates
- Website Builder
Although they lack services like VPS and dedicated hosting, 101domain still believe it has served the customers quite well when it comes to providing B2B services. And as the company name suggests the main service of 101domain is domain registration.
But in this 101domain review, we'll focus on 101domain shared hosting.
101domain prides in easy and affordable services, but how does that look in reality? Let's take a look at the pricing, features, and performance of this provider!
There are three web hosting plans to choose from and the pricing ranges from $7.33/mo with the Personal plan and goes up to $22.50/mo for Business Pro plan. And these advertised prices are valid only when getting the annual subscription. You can also choose to pay monthly or go for a three-year term - the price gets lower with the longer subscription period.
Here's a quick run-through of the 101domain web hosting plans:
- Personal Hosting - $7.99 per month, free encryption, 50GB website storage, unlimited bandwidth, etc.
- Business Hosting - $14.99 per month, free domain name, 100GB website storage, unlimited websites, etc.
- Business Pro Hosting -$24.99 per month, unlimited website storage, free dedicated IP, free SSL certificates, etc.
For personal projects, you will have to pay $7.99 per month to host your website on a 101domain server. For more significant projects, you can choose more expensive Business or Business Pro plans.
What disappoints me is the fact there are no cheaper plans available to make 101domain hosting affordable for all types of users. Not only that, but the features on offer just don't justify the price. Best web hosting providers offer plenty of better deals.
But let's move on with our 101domain review.
Take a look at the separate plans in more details to help you compare the features:
|Dedicated IP||$48 per year||$48 per year||Free|
|Customer support||Live chat, phone, knowledge base||Live chat, phone, knowledge base||Live chat, phone, knowledge base|
101domain offers unlimited bandwidth and the disk space is also not bad. For the control panel, you are getting Plesk which might not be the best one, but it certainly is manageable.
Unfortunately, 101domain does not offer assisted website transfer - this function is only available for domains transfer. Also, the website builder is not included - the provider offers the paid option instead. The same thing goes with backups. That's quite disappointing as the backups are something you definitely need while running a website.
On the plus side, 101domain does offer a 30-day money-back guarantee, SSL certificates, and good protection. So, I guess it isn't all bad.
On the other hand, the fact is that you don't get 24/7 support and this is a big let down for me. Customer support is 9 AM to 5 PM 7 days a week. If I'm working late at 2 AM after one too many coffees, I don't want to have to wait 'til the morning to hear back about any issues I may be having!
So all in all, there are some good features, but also there are some serious shortages.
Testing out the 101domain response times showed that this provider has passable speed. It gets an above average mark and knowing that it uses HDD in the servers, that is a good result.
Also, 101domain has servers in two locations - the US and Netherlands. This way your website will perform evenly not only in the US but also in Europe.
Talking about the server uptime, 101domain has a 99.9% uptime guarantee. And the provider backs it up with the compensation if the uptime is less than promised.
The company will refund 10% of your monthly expenses although you can only use that money to purchase some 101domain products.
All in all, calculating possible downtime, you can see that having 99.9% uptime is really decent.
Server speed and comfortable subscription terms - those might be the features you are looking for. Here are the advantages of 101domain:
- Above average speed – even if it is not the top performance, such speed is something worth appreciation.
- Short-term plans – you can host your sites for just 30 days if you are not interested in committing to any yearly plan.
This provider has some downsides to consider. Things like high prices and weak customer support might be a dealbreaker here. Here are the 101domain cons:
- Remote backup – you need to pay for a separate plan before you can have your remote backup option activated.
- High prices – the prices for the different plans are a little over the board if you ask me.
- Paid website builder – you have to pay for website builder when you can get it for free from other providers.
- Lacking customer support - while the live-chat is always welcome, sadly there's no 24/7 support.
101domain Review - The Verdict
Overall, 101domain is not the best choice for web hosting. While the response times are great and the plans have many great features, there are some things missing.
Add to your cart the essential features such as back-ups and a website builder, and the already expensive price will get even higher. Moreover, the customer service is limited and that really hurts the customer experience.
All in all, you may consider buying a domain from 101domain, but I wouldn't risk with the web hosting services if I were you...
