1Freehosting claims to be a completely free way for you to build and host a professional quality site with just as many features as the big boys.
But is this really possible? Can you genuinely get free web hosting that competes with the leaders of the industry?
I signed up and reviewed 1Freehosting to find out.
Not a Great First Impression
From the outset, it is clear that 1Freehosting are trying to be quirky. They have a fan zone in which users can upload video messages and short reviews. There's also the assurance that "this is not a joke".
It isn't the most reassuring start for a business looking for reliability, security and trust.
Naturally, I looked for some recent 1Freehosting reviews by other users. But this is when the alarm bells started to ring.
It turns out that users commonly report extended downtime and disappearing sites, with no response from customer support. I'm not terrifically surprised in all honesty.
Let's see if their 'free' pricing claim has any substance to it and can salvage my review...
After checking extensively while conducting my 1Freehosting review, I found that the claim that it is free is indeed true.
They seem to be able to offer free hosting with FTP, MySQL and decent disk space for no cost at all, which almost seems too good to be true.
They claim that this is because they receive donations via their community site, from which you can purchase merchandise.
I guess this is plausible, but personally, I'd rather just spend my money on premium web hosting company.
This way, you definitely know where the company's funding comes from and what it does.
|Disk space limit||10GB|
|How many domains allowed||Unlimited|
|SSD or HDD used in servers||HDD|
The offering at 1Freehosting includes 10GB of disk space and 100GB bandwidth. This is very good when compared with other free competitors.
Access to FTP, PHP5, and cURL is also impressive. In many ways, 1Freehosting is behaving like a proper premium hosting provider.
The customer support is seriously lacking though. You can take a look at the forum, but it isn't very well-organized. Alternatively, you can submit a ticket on the control panel.
Don't hold your breath for a response, though. A few days later, I am still yet to receive one.
During this review of 1Freehosting, it became clear that it isn't the fastest. However, it doesn't actually perform horribly - just steadily below average.
Downtime is a recurrent issue though. The claim of 99.9% uptime doesn't stand up to scrutiny. Downtimes were fairly common and lengthy.
Is it the Best Free Option Available?
1Freehosting certainly offers excellent disk space and bandwidth, with several features that you wouldn't normally expect from a free service. However, there are serious issues with downtime and the lack of customer service is concerning.
If you submit a ticket, there is no guaranteed response time and the community forum isn't much use. The bottom line is that if you have problems, you're on your own. The below image is just one of many complaints...
While 1Freehosting really is free, it's certainly not the best option in terms of reliability, speed or trustworthiness.
So, I can understand its appeal as a community product (if you're a fan of that sort of thing), but not as a real contender to be a professional hosting provider.
It's more of a novelty than a hosting provider.
