When you're searching for a solid and hosting provider there are quite a few options to choose from. It mostly depends on the price and the features they can offer you.
In this HostForWeb review, we will find out exactly how good this provider is and how responsive its support is.
Is this the 'HostForYou'? Let's try and find out.
What is HostForWeb?
HostForWeb is a hosting service based in New York. It hosts 2+ million websites and offers many types of hosting - all the way from basic shared to massive dedicated servers, and everything in between. The company's goal is to "provide reliable hosting solutions paired with excellent customer service".
The HostForWeb website is easy to navigate with a simple layout and clear explanations of every product.
This straightforward layout is particularly important given the range of hosting types on offer. Besides everyday shared hosting, HostForWeb offers VPS, Dedicated, Reseller, and Cloud hosting.
All hosting plans include 24/7 live chat, email and phone support. You can use both toll-free or international number to get help. And HostForWeb makes sure that you would get that help as fast as possible.
Our customer support interaction was, in a word, excellent. When we had a question about HostForWeb's service or ran into a problem, we used the live chat option to solve them.
And in most cases received an answer in under two minutes. This is well under a regular business-standard. But the thing we liked the most is that these answers were straightforward and to the point, with no jumping around or waiting for another department.
If for some reason you can't get support to help you, or you like fixing things yourself HostForWeb uses HelpDesk. In there you can find all the news about maintenance and changes, submit a support ticket or find most answers in a knowledge base.
You can also use Troubleshooter to find specific solutions, and it works similarly to windows troubleshooter.
HostForWeb offers a solid support package, giving you a knowledge base, fast live chat, and phone help option that will not leave you waiting for hours.
HostForWeb's prices are quite reasonable. Shared hosting begins at $3.95/month, while VPS starts at $39.95 price point. Dedicated servers here are cheap for the industry, starting at $69.95/month. But note that every plan includes free website migration assistance.
For the most popular shared hosting, there are three tiers available: The $4.17/month Mini plan, the $3.95/month Smart plan and the $12.95/month Business Pro package. The latter two are currently discounted up to 30%.
If we take a look at VPS options, we have even more selection. The price point ranges from $39.95 a month to $99.95 a month. The cheapest plan will give you 2GB of RAM, 100GB SSD storage space and 2TB bandwidth.
Not everything is that great, those prices that are on sale are only available if you purchase its services for at least a year. This is the requirement for VPS, if you want to get the discount price with shared hosting you have to make a 36-month deal.
But you do get a free domain name when you choose to buy 12, 24, or 36 months of hosting.
Overall, HostForWeb offers a great price and feature balance for most of its hosting options. Just beware that the prices shown are available if you buy its services for one or three years.
Shared Hosting Plans and Pricing in More Detail
Because shared hosting is the most popular service, let's focus our attention on it. The question on your mind probably is - why is the Mini plan more expensive than the Smart plan?
It's a bit complicated, but you can only buy the mini package for a minimum of 1 year for $50. There is no way to purchase this plan for a shorter period. So honestly, there are just 2 plans that you are left with.
But a 50/year deal for a 1 website, 10GB of disk space, and 100GB of bandwidth is a great choice if you want a small project, blog, or portfolio website.
For personal use, the Smart Plan will be perfectly suitable thanks to the free domain registration it includes. You get unlimited storage space as well as bandwidth, so you can create whatever you want for a relatively small price.
Below you can see what is included in every HostForWeb plan:
|HostForWeb||Mini||Smart Plan||Business Pro|
|No. of Domains||1||Unlimited||Unlimited|
|SSL Included?||Shared||Shared||Private Certificate|
|HDD or SSD||SSD||SSD||SSD|
|Customer Support||24/7 Phone, live chat and tickets||24/7 Phone, live chat and tickets||24/7 Phone, live chat and tickets|
Business users, on the other hand, will find the Business Pro package a better fit because it comes with a private SSL certificate. That's a must-have if you want visitors to trust your site.
HostForWeb can offer you a solid shared hosting package. The Smart plan is a smart choice for you with unmetered storage space, bandwidth, and an unlimited number of domains.
HostForWeb handles all site migrations for you for free. That's actually rare for a budget host!
Once I signed up, I found the included software and perks really did enhance my hosting experience. All hosting packages include a drag-and-drop site builder and 300 pre-installed apps.
The website builder is not the most advanced, and can't really compare to the like of Wix, but it still might be interesting for some. And it's worth to mention that you can use Weebly if you want to.
And if you ever run into any critical error, you can use the free daily backup to restore your site right back to action.
Having a backup in most cases required a single or monthly payment, but HostForWeb gives them for free. Even better is that they are made daily so you won't lose much of your progress.
The features that HostForWeb offers on its Smart and Business plans are more than enough to justify the monthly price point. And SSD drives and free SSL are always a plus.
HostForWeb promises you an uptime of 99.99% and fast loading websites. It even adds 2.5x CPU and memory for the Business plan users. And for most parts, HostForWeb delivers decent results.
We didn't experience any downtime during our test period, verifying that HostForWeb is a reliable provider.
As for the speed part we used Bitcatcha and GTmetrix. Bitcatcha tested the response time of the HostForWeb server around the world. And in the USA the results were great - 15ms (east-side) and 71ms (west-side).
The performance wasn't spectacular outside the USA, but that's to be expected as HostForWeb only operates a single New York data center.
And finally, we used GTmetrix to look at the optimization of our website. We got a performance score of 88% and a B rank, our website fully loaded in 2.2 seconds.
While the YSlow score was a bit lower, C rank with 79%, both the servers and our website were decently optimized. And 2.2 seconds speed is just a few marks short of the golden 2-second rule.
HostForWeb has solid stability and speed. For the price, you are paying you to get response time as low as 15ms in the USA.
