To start with, when looking for a good hosting provider you possibly will visit their website. Well, Hostica has... how to say... a little bit old-school looking website with cartoonish Rick Astley lookalike presenting you services. How is that for a Hostica review teaser?
Who Is Hostica?
Founded in 1999, Hostica has been in the hosting game for almost 10 years. While the Hostica website says their experience allows them to be one of the best web hosts in the world, we will look into it further to see if Hostica is all it’s cracked up to be. Let’s dive into this Hostica review and find out. Is Hostica a good option or should you give them a hard pass?
Services Offered By Hostica
If you have a business that you want to get online right away, Hostica has an array of services that will allow you getting started. Their services are more or less essential to get going:
- Shared Hosting
- VPS Hosting
- Reseller Hosting
- SSL Certificates
- Website Builder
VPS is a solid hosting option, but many people do not have the need for it or the budget when they are starting out. For the sake of this Hostica review, we are going to focus in on the shared hosting service. While Hostica says its years of experience makes their hosting packages worth the money, let’s see how much money they want you to pay.
Hostica Pricing & Plans
Let’s have a quick look at these pricing options that Hostica offers:
- Economy – $1.99 per month, 1 domain included, 1 subdomain included, 1 FTP account, 3.56GB of disk space & 10GB of bandwidth.
- Value – $4.99 per month, 2 domains included, 5 subdomains included, 3 FTP accounts, 7GB of disk space, 50GB of bandwidth.
- Plus – $8.99 per month, 5 domains included, 10 subdomains included, 10 FTP accounts, 30GB of disk space, 100GB bandwidth.
- Prime – $12.99 per month, unlimited domains, unlimited subdomains, unlimited FTP accounts, unlimited disk space unlimited bandwidth. *
*They do note that you should read their terms of service about the unlimited disk space and unlimited bandwidth, but there is nothing concerning there for the average user.
For the unlimited service, you are going to be putting out a considerable amount of money more than many other web hosting sites. With $12.99 being the price of unlimited, there are other options that will allow you to start hosting your website with them for as little as $2 per month.
With the economy plan, you can get a fairly good price - only $1.99 for a 3-month cycle. Usually hosting providers charge this low for about 12-month cycle. But what about the renewal price? I contacted their support because thought it will be easy to find the answer this way. Still waiting for an answer though.
While this might not seem like a lot of money, if you want some additional features with your cheap economy class plan, you'll have some additional expenses. And, believe me, these features might be quite essential: Website Builder, SSL Certificates, Email Security, Website Security. This can skyrocket your order summary:
It's the same with other plans and any billing cycle, so $1.99 may not be the final price that you'll pay.
So far in this Hostica review, we’ve figured out that Hostica pricing is steeper than some other similar hosts. Let’s see if things get better as we move forward.
Plans In More Detail
Since Hostica is probably going to lose on pricing, we need to get down into the nitty-gritty. How are these plans different from each other? Do they beat out the competition or fall flat?
|How many domains allowed?||1||2||5||Unlimited|
|HDD or SSD used in servers?||HDD||HDD||HDD||HDD|
|Assisted website transfer||No||No||No||No|
|Choice of server location||US||US||US||US|
|Free automated back-ups||No||No||No||No|
We tested Hostica to see how fast your response times would be if you use their service. Not impressive and bitcatcha gives them a C for response time. On the other hand, their response time from Japan is way better than from many other providers. From the other-other hand, the response time from Europe could be better...
Now we come to the fun part of the Hostica review, we get to say all kinds of nice things about them, or at least what we could find.
With a 99.9% uptime guarantee, this is as good of a guarantee you are going to see. They pride themselves on having redundancy so your website is not going down when people are trying to view and possibly buy a product or service from you.
Website Builder Included
Having a website builder included is very helpful. Most people are not technically inclined and it can be challenging. There are upsells to use Weebly’s website builder, so make sure you remember you do have a website builder included for free. Weebly’s is a better quality, but you can still get by with the Hostica free option if needed.
If everything goes off the rails and you are disappointed with the services it's nice to know that there's an option to back out.
Only 3-month Billing Cycle
If we ignore fee for additional features, only $1.99 for a 3-month billing cycle is quite a rare deal.
Everyone is used to getting instant access to information and when you need help, you want to make sure it is available to you. There are two customer support options – live chat and email, but the email wasn’t listed as a support option since “live” chat is not live and they will email you after you’ve entered your information. They are basically the same channel of support. There is no telephone number so you can get in contact with the company.
Lack Of Features
No SSL included, no SSD servers, limited disk space and badwith (except Prime package), no Email accounts included... And the list goes on.
High Pricing Options
Paying $12.99 per month for shared hosting isn’t necessary with all of the great options available. There are other hosting providers that have 99.9% uptime and charge a fraction of what Hostica is asking.
Performance is Less than Impressive
The lack of wow factor with performance doesn’t warrant the price you are going to pay to have the unlimited top plan. If you’re going to put out that kind of money, the hosting resources need to be top of the line and firing fast.
Hostica Review – Is Hostica Right for You?
In this Hostica review, we’ve gone over a lot of information and it’s all pointing to a no on Hostica. Most people that have reviewed and used Hostica tend to agree the Hostica is not one of the most impressive hosting options available to you.
I have to circle back around to the fact that they only pretend to have a LiveChat support and are asking money for features that are usually included in packages of other hosting providers. Hostica just doesn't shine (and looking at their page don't feel the need for improvement). Their last blog entry is almost a year old and that may be an alarming sign, describing their attitude. Sadly, we’re going to have to give Hostica a thumbs down.
