Many web hosts entice potential customers with super deals for hosting plans – $5, $2 or even $1 monthly prices are not unheard-of. In the end, competition is fierce and customers are pickier than ever before. Can Hostripples satisfy them?

That’s why cheap prices are often not enough. To differentiate their offer, many companies offer extra benefits, such as a good server location. And Hostripples is no different – $1 hosting packages and US location is exactly what they advertise on their homepage. Is it a good deal? Let’s find out in this in-depth Hostripples review!

What is Hostripples?

Hostripples is an international web hosting provider owned by SARPS Technologies with offices in India and the United States. On top of having a corporate presence in two large online markets, Hostripples operates 18 data centers: North America, Europe (13 out of 18!) and Asia. We’ll see whether the international presence translates into performance and quality services.

Services Offered by Hostripples

Hostripples is a web hosting provider specializing in offering affordable hosting. They especially emphasize their shared plans, but they also offer a wide range of services, including VPS and dedicated servers. Although in this Hostripples review I want to focus on their main offering, let’s quickly list all of their services:

  • Shared Hosting (separated into different categories based on systems/performance – SSD, Linux, Windows, JSP/Tomcat, Business Hosting, SEO Class C IP)
  • Reseller – SSD Linux, Linux and Windows
  • VPS Servers – XEN VPS Server, OpenVZ VPS, Cheap Cloud, Cheap High RAM, Linux SSD
  • Dedicated Servers – for gaming and website hosting.

As well as some extra services, such as:

  • Business Email
  • SSL Certificates
  • SiteLock Website Scanning
  • Domains

As you can see their services are tailored to meet the needs of a variety of different customers. From beginners on a very tight budget, who are just starting out in the online world, to business clients who need reliable dedicated servers in a location of their choice. With lots to choose from in-between depending on individual performance requirements.

Hostripples Pricing & Plans

Let’s have a look at the most affordable, popular and massively-advertised Hostripples product – shared hosting.

The company offers three pricing tiers:

  • Smart plan at $1/mo.
  • Business plan at $4/mo.
  • Enterprise plan at $9/mo.

As promised, you can choose a $1/month plan for a US-based server (my main focus in this Hostripples review). The biggest differences that could be important for beginners is the lack of free domain name in the first two plans and just 1GB of allocated RAM in the Smart one.

1GB RAM is very little, especially if you plan to add more sites. Naturally, if you were able to, as Smart plan allows you to host just one website (compared to 10 under Business and an unlimited number of them in the Enterprise plan). This means that if you are looking for the cheapest hosting to host more than one site, Hostripples might not be the right choice for you.

But, if you decide to sign up for their $1 plan, let me tell you that it took me quite some time to find where to get the deal. Even though they have this big button right above the fold, it doesn’t take you anywhere when you click it!

Not discouraged, I scrolled down and found a list of their services with the starting price for each – and decided to click the Read More below the Linux cPanel Hosting:

This time, I was taken to a page listing all data center locations, hosting features, as well as a short FAQ. But still no CTA button. Luckily, after a few minutes, I’ve noticed that you can click on the flags representing countries in where they have their data centers. Naturally, I went with the US:

Finally, I was given the opportunity to see the independent pricing for my particular plan and even sign-up. What I also saw is the actual price for the plan if I tried to sign up for less than the maximum contract duration.  And for 1 year it’s actually $1.5 per month and with processing fee – $18.89 per year.

Hostripples review pricing breakdown

Pricing Break-Down

So it’s that thing I need to emphasize in my Hostripples review – the pricing scheme, typical for hosting companies. You can get hosting for just $1/mo as long as you pay for 36 months upfront.

Length

Smart

Business

Enterprise

36 months

$1/mo. ($36 upfront)

$4/mo. ($144 upfront)

$9/mo. ($324 upfront)

24 months

$1.20/mo. ($28.8 upfront)

$4.60/mo. ($110.4 upfront)

$9.60/mo. ($230.4 upfront)

12 months

$1.50/mo. ($18 upfront)

$6/mo. ($72 upfront)

$10/mo. ($120 upfront)

6 months

Unavailable

$7/mo. ($42 upfront)

$10.50/mo. ($63 upfront)

3 months

Unavailable

$8/mo. ($24 upfront)

$11/mo. ($33 upfront)

On top of the above, you need to pay Gateway Processing Fees – an extra 4.96% of the final price.

As you can see, in a 12-month one you’ll be charged $1.50/month ($18 upfront). On the one hand, it’s just $1.50. But on the other, it’s a 50% price increase. The drawback is, you can’t sign-up for the Smart plan for a period shorter than 12 months and you always have to pay for the whole period upfront.

Plans in More Detail

The difference in the number of sites that you can host as well as the commitment length are not the only differences between the plans. Let’s dig a bit deeper and compare the main features of each plan:

What’s worth mentioning here is that their cheapest plans come with an HDD storage. This can severely impact the performance of your sites, and it’s not listed explicitly on the Linux Shared hosting page. Luckily, the company offers separate SSD hosting packages.

Performance – What You Really Get for Your Money?

Speaking of HDD, let’s add some data to the Hostripples review. In the end, we pay for hosting because we want others to access our website. Unfortunately, the tested site got graded D+, and the tool even advised I changed my hosting provider! Definitely nothing to be proud of.

It’s also worth noting that the hosting boasts 99.9% uptime – which is good, although according to our Uptime Calculator, it still means that your site could be offline for an average of 1m 26s every day. Doesn’t sound like a lot, but the times add up. Your Hostripples website could be down for almost 9 hours every year – and that would still be within the 99.9% uptime guarantee!

Pros of using Hostripples

What would be a good Hostripples review without listing its advantages and disadvantages? Let’s see if the company has a competitive edge over other providers – and if, in the end, it’s worth investing even a few dollars in it.

Good Support

Quick and to the point – that’s how I can describe answers received from Hostripples support. I contacted them using the live chat available on their homepage. A representative was with me right away, she answered my questions just as quickly as she connected. On top of that, the answers were accurate and exactly what I was looking for. A big benefit, especially for all the newbies.

Bang for the Buck. Literally One Buck

Their advertising is true – you can get hosting for as little as $1/month. And the package you get is quite generous. Despite just one website allowance, you get CPanel, an SSL, unlimited number of email accounts and access to great support. And you can always resign within 30 days and still get your money back. Guaranteed!

Great Security Out of the Box

A great thing about their $1 deal (as well as of other shared packages) is that it comes with great security features. Strong anti-DDoS and anti-malware protection, as well as automated backups, are included in every shared hosting plan.

Cons of using Hostripples

Sadly, their offer isn’t flawless. And two of the flaws could make or break the deal especially for those who plan to slowly grow their business and increase their hosting needs as they go.

Price Quickly Adds up

In this hostripples review, I kind of focused a lot on their advertised $1 deal. But in reality, it’s only available if you pay for 36 months upfront. If you just want to play around, you have to either buy a 36-month-long-deal or sign up for a shorter plan. But if you sign up for a 12-month plan, you’ll have to pay $1.50 for each month ($18 total), instead of $1 in the 36-months one.

No SSD shared hosting in the US

On top of a quickly increasing overall cost, this could be a real deal breaker. Imagine you want to jump from shared HDD to shared SSD but stay in the US. Sadly, you can’t do that. The SSD Shared Server plan (a natural next step for all beginners) is available only in India, UK and Poland:

This means that if you plan to increase your hosting needs, you’re better off investing a bit more upfront into faster and more reliable providers such as Hostinger (which costs just $2.15 in its cheapest plan).

Their Website Is Not the Most Intuitive in the World

A minor one but still a drawback. Text on some pages is very hard to read what may confuse or push away non-tech savvy newcomers before they even pick a plan. I must admit it took some time before I was able to find the sign-up button of a chosen hosting package!

Hostripples Review Summary

Hostripples $1 plan sounds like a good deal but the requirement to pay for 36 months and lack of SSD US hosting can be a big drawback. But, if your site is fairly small and you just want to pay a small sum of money upfront and forget about the payments for some time, it could be a good choice.

Overall, I believe it’s best if you calculate whether staying that long with one hosting plan makes sense for you. If not, or you want something where your site will load faster, you could be better off with other companies – even if you have to pay a little bit more upfront.
