Established in 2005, KnownHost is a US-based hosting provider that boasts high-quality bandwidth and 4 operated datacentres spread across North America and Europe.
However, excuse the pun - but with more than a decade in the business, KnownHost still hasn't become a very well known web host, lacking behind dozens of business leaders in terms of popularity.
But maybe everyone's missing a gem, and KnownHost is worthy of fulfilling the prophecy hidden inside its name? Let's find out!
KnownHost - First Impression
When I first loaded the KnownHost site, I was pleasantly surprised. The site uses video backgrounds effectively and features a responsive design. Of course, the host's website isn't of vital importance, but it's still encouraging to see sensible design decisions here.
After exploring the front page, I adventured into the KnownHost services and discovered some gold. There is a wealth of hosting types on offer, including cloud shared hosting, managed VPS, managed cloud VPS and managed dedicated services.
For the purpose of this review, it's the shared cloud hosting services that I'll be testing.
One of the things I noticed early in my KnownHost review was its claimed mission to 'provide our customers... with the highest level of service and support'.
Given that, I found it disappointing that no technical support phone line or live chat service is available, even though there is a sales phone number.
Still, I was happy to discover that the 24/7 helpdesk ticket system responded promptly. The technical staff manning it replied to my queries quickly with answers that showed they were knowledgable about a range of common hosting problems.
I then continued to dig deeper and discovered another piece of treasure.
The KnownHost Forum
Unlike a lot of other hosting providers I have tested, KnownHost supplies its community with a forum feature. Granted, it operates similarly to a lot of FAQ systems, however, it means users can also talk with one another.
A cool touch is the 'Suggestions' thread which allows customers to suggest new ideas to KnownHost. It's a great way to promote a transparent culture, while it also brings users together and aids KnownHost in accustoming its service to what its customers want.
As for pricing, KnownHost does a great job of keeping things simple: there are just two plans for its shared cloud hosting.
The SH-1 plan ($6.95/month) includes 5GB SSD storage and unlimited bandwidth, while the SH-2 plan ($12.95/month) contains unlimited SSD storage and unlimited bandwidth.
Note that KnownHost's standard shared hosting packages share identical specs and prices to the cloud plans. Using a cloud server architecture offers major speed, scalability, and reliability hosting benefits.
|SSD or HDD||SSD||SSD|
|No. of Domains Allowed||5||Unlimited|
|Money-Back Guarantee||30-Day Period||30-Day Period|
These aren't dramatically overpriced, but you can definitely find cheaper deals elsewhere for similar specs. If you're hunting for a good deal, you may want to look around before taking the plunge.
Quick tip: There is currently a 50% discount offered on these plans, but it's only for your first term. For instance, if you pay monthly, it's only for your first month. After that, you'll be reverted to full price.
After testing KnownHost with Bitcatcha, it's evident that its speeds are average. I'm neither disappointed nor over the moon with the response times shown.
Also, in the 9-month period that I had a test site hosted with the SH-2 plan, I had no complaints regarding uptime.
KnownHost Review - Conclusion
It has its ups and its downs, but it seems KnownHost does have the right to brag about its services after all. The range of hosting types on offer means there'll almost certainly be a package to suit your tastes, even if cloud shared hosting isn't your cup of tea.
The prices are indeed slightly more expensive than the industry average, but I can certainly recommend KnownHost as a reliable hosting provider. Its server performance is difficult to fault, and the support on offer is efficient.
