In 2005, a group of friends got together to discuss the future of photography - following that discussion, PhotoShelter was born.
And this went quite well as nowadays more than 80,000 photographers around the world use PhotoShelter to run their businesses.
But, should you follow the crowd?
Created specifically for professional photographers to build their clientele and increase sales, PhotoShelter is a genuine website builder for photography-related projects.
PhotoShelter's dashboard is built for professionals - it is sleek, easy-to-use, and comes packed with useful features. In my opinion, their templates are outstanding, too.
PhotoShelter provides a great platform for storing photos. It also allows you to share photos with the public or send them privately to clients with ease.
PhotoShelter also offers an eCommerce solution which allows you to set up an online shop with an integrated shopping cart.
Among other useful features, this lets you accept orders, ship worldwide, and fulfill orders with automated print vendors.
One other brilliant feature is the option to apply watermarks to your photographs in order to protect them from unwanted reuse.
PhotoShelter vs Squarespace
PhotoShelter is aimed at photographers who want to boost their clientele and showcase photographs using images optimized for retina display. PhotoShelter also stands out with full-screen portfolios and integrated shopping cart build purely for photography.
Squarespace, on the other hand, is a drag-and-drop website builder aimed at producing unique and custom built websites for individuals and businesses with the help of gallery blocks, audio collections, social links and style editors.
The templates, of course, are different as the PhotoShelter has a niche audience of photographers and Squarespace is aiming for all businesses.
PhotoShelter offers its clients two subscription options: monthly, and annually. If you want to save money, then it's the most logical to choose the longer subscription.
The per month price plans range from $10.00 to $45.00, depending on which package you choose.
As you can see, PhotoShelter is a little on the pricey side of website builders, with their standard plan priced at $25.00 per month. While this plan is packed with features and large numbers of storage, compared to other website builders this price is high.

PhotoShelter has pointed its lens towards professional photographers, and with this in mind I would recommend the standard price plan. The greater number of storage and client proofing would suit professionals very well.
PhotoShelter also provides a 14-day free trial. For some reason, other PhotoShelter reviews stress that it requires bank details to activate the trial. However, I can confirm that it does not.
To complete the performance of PhotoShelter, I ran some tests to check how well It performs in the speed field.
This was a rather average result, and therefore I cannot say anything too good or bad regarding the speed of PhotoShelter, as it completely depends on where you are.
