RimuHosting, pronounced "ree-moo", is named after a tree from New Zealand; the country in which it was founded in 2002. Despite having roots so far from its supply areas, RimuHosting actually runs data centers in North America and Europe, as well as Australia and Asia.
So, does RimuHosting succeed in making you "deliriously happy", as its website claims?
Let's find that out in this RimuHosting review.
RimuHosting: First Impressions
The RimuHosting website is aimed at developers and Linux users with a font and color scheme that match Linux distros (short for a Linux distribution) like Ubuntu.
The first things to note is RimuHosting only offers VPS and dedicated servers. It doesn't support traditional shared hosting because it's not trying to appeal to your everyday consumer.
The focus on developer-appeal continues with the number of programming languages RimuHosting installs on its VPS servers:
- Ruby on Rails
You also get a choice of Linux distros, and VPS servers use Xen VM monitoring software to offer the same root access as full-on dedicated machines.
Excellent Custom Setup
Even before signing up to a VPS hosting plan, I was impressed. After filling out an assessment form, I was immediately contacted by a friendly advisor who helped me install a custom software suite.
My experience with RimuHosting's support team was that everyone I spoke to was as knowledgeable as you'd expect from a Linux-oriented host. Staff members are available 24/7 via email and tickets but, unfortunately, they're only accessible by phone during NZ working hours.
High Levels of Reliability
I didn't experience any downtime during my RimuHosting review, which was great. If uptime had dropped below 99.9%, the RimuHosting SLA would have allowed me to claim hosting credits.
RimuHosting makes it super easy to design a completely custom hosting package. However, if you want a preset setup, there are three main VPS plans available. They range from $14.91/month to $33.85/month.
As discussed in the next section, the key difference between the plans is the amount of bandwidth and storage they offer.
Dedicated servers are available too, with prices that are given in the local currency of your data center. The base price for a Dallas-based dual CPU dedicated server is $359/month.
If you want a mix of dedicated power and VPS architecture, consider RimuHosting's VPS-on-dedicated package which is available from $155/month.
And if you need something a little cheaper, a RimuHosting subsidiary called LaunchtimeVPS offers slightly more affordable Cloud VPS packages.
RimuHosting Pricing in More Detail
Here are the three preset VPS plans in more detail:
|No. of Domains||Unlimited||Unlimited||Unlimited|
|HDD or SSD||SSD||SSD||SSD|
|Customer Support||24/7 tickets and email||24/7 tickets and email||24/7 tickets and email|
|Money-Back Guarantee||30-Day Period||30-Day Period||30-Day Period|
Important features such as SSD storage and SSL certificates are included with all VPS plans. Disk space and bandwidth will be the deciding factor when choosing a package, with the appropriately named 'Popular' package providing enough bandwidth to be suitable for most users.
If you require a lot of bandwidth and not much storage, or the reverse, you should create a custom plan instead.
I tested my RimuHosting VPS site using Bitcatcha for my RimuHosting review.
Given RimuHosting's low number of VMs per CPU core, I was expecting faster times. Sadly, global performance was mediocre at best.
Final Thoughts: Is RimuHosting Worth The Investment?
My experience was let down by surprisingly middle of the road performance.
However, it remains clear that RimuHosting offers powerful VPS server technology at affordable prices, and manages to provide excellent customer support while doing it.
Its service is certainly designed for Linux power users and developers, so for everyday hosting, I'd advise you look elsewhere.
