Scaleway is a cloud hosting service with data centers in France and the Netherlands. Its mission is to 'make cloud computing ultra easy'.
Does it manage to do that? And with all that it does, is Scaleway the right hosting service for you?
Scaleway Review: First Impressions
Scaleway is a web hosting service that specializes in cloud hosting. Essentially, if you sign up, you'll receive a virtual server stored across multiple physical machines. Scaleway does not offer shared, VPS or dedicated servers.
Upon loading its website, the first thing I noticed is that Scaleway's cloud servers are designed for developers, rather than everyday consumers.
Advanced users will be able to take complete control over their hosting environment thanks to Application Program Interface (API) and Command Line Interface (CLI) support.
Developer-oriented Digital Products
Scaleway also offers several other services targeted toward developers:
- Object Storage: Can integrate with Amazon S3 APIs.
- GPU Instances: Ideal for data processing or AI learning.
- BareMetal Servers: Offers complete server hardware control.
These products aren't the focus of my Scaleway hosting review, but it's good to know that they're available.
Useful Server Management Software
Once I'd signed up to a cloud hosting package, I was given access to Scaleway's custom management interface.
The server manager was simple to navigate and allowed me to quickly add extra resources to my account. As the name suggests, Scaleway is focused on scalability.
Poor Customer Support
I felt let down by Scaleway's customer support. Although ticket customer service is available 24/7, not all hosting packages include a maximum guaranteed response time.
I encountered over-billing issues during my Scaleway review and customer agents failed to address the problem. I decided to investigate other users' experiences to see if this was unusual:
I quickly realized that overcharging is a recurring problem for Scaleway.
Founded and ran by a team of developers, Hostinger has plenty of VPS and Cloud plans to choose from. And what's best, that the reviews of the company are overwhelmingly positive:
Scaleway hosting packages are divided into 'Start' and 'Pro' packages. Both are offered in four different configurations. Starter prices vary between €1.99/month and €15.99/month. Meanwhile, Pro plans cost between €24.99/month and €179.99/month. None of these prices include tax, and they'll vary depending on your location.
Scaleway Plans in More Detail
Let's take a closer look at those 'Start' packages:
|No. of Domains||Unlimited||Unlimited||Unlimited||Unlimited|
|Email Addresses||Not Included||Not Included||Not Included||Not Included|
|HDD or SSD||SSD||SSD||SSD||SSD|
|Customer Support||24/7 Tickets||24/7 Tickets||24/7 Tickets||24/7 Tickets|
|Money-Back Guarantee||30-Day Period||30-Day Period||30-Day Period||30-Day Period|
'Start' plans offer good value for money. At €1.99/month, the base plan is a good deal for 25GB storage and unlimited bandwidth. It's a shame it doesn't include better quality customer support though.
I tested my Scaleway site's load times with Bitcatcha. Results were acceptable; readers shouldn't have trouble loading your site.
But of course, from Cloud hosting, that is fully expected.
Scaleway Review: Final Thoughts
Initially, Scaleway appeared to be a promising web host that offered a lot of features to attract web developers.
Unfortunately, due to my own negative customer service experience and a large number of similar stories from other customers, this is not a service I can recommend. It can be good, sure - but in many cases, this might not be worth the risk.
