Yahoo Small Business is one of the best-known web hosting providers in the industry.

For business getting started, Yahoo Small Business is a one-stop shop providing web hosting, website building, domain name, email, and eCommerce solutions.

So in this Yahoo Small Business review, we'll test whether you can trust your small business to this provider.

What is Yahoo Small Business?

As the Yahoo Small Business name suggests, it is a Yahoo web hosting company designed to meet the needs of small to medium-sized businesses. For the hosting, you'll find both simple shared and WordPress hosting plans.

Yahoo Small Business isn't just a web hosting service though. It also offers numerous other online presence solutions. These include a website building toolkit, known as 'Yahoo Small Business Websites', which is included with all web hosting packages. The website builder can be purchased separately too.

In the Yahoo Small Business list of services, you'll also find domain names, eCommerce, and email accounts (it's Yahoo after all).

So without any further ado, let's see how it goes for Yahoo web hosting!

Yahoo Small Business Pricing

Yahoo Small Business has 3 web hosting plans with the pricing starting at $5.99/month. The Advanced plan costs as low as $9.99/month and Premier plan can be bought with the price tag of $11.99/month.

More important, though is, what you get for the price:

  • The Basic plan costing $5.99/month gets you 100GB of disk space and data transfer, 1 free domain, 10 website pages, and 250 email accounts.
  • The Advanced for $9.99 per month includes unlimited website pages, 500 email accounts, 500GB disk space, and data transfer, as well as 1 free domain.
  • The premier plan starts at $11.99 per month and offers 1000 email addresses, unlimited disk space, unlimited transfers, and domain privacy protection.

For any of the hosting plans you purchase on Yahoo Small Business, your price will be billed after totaling the applicable fees minus any promotions on the plan. The initial charge includes the fee for the first term of the plan, plus the applicable setup fees.

It seems Yahoo Small Business does not provide much resources. However, when you look at the average page size which is 2MB, you can clearly see that you could fit a number of 10-page websites even on the Basic plan server. Though the data transfer limit per month could be larger.

To see, which plan would fit your needs, check the table:

Basic Advanced Premier
Disk 100GB 500GB Unlimited
Bandwidth 100GB/mo 500GB/mo Unlimited
Domains allowed 1+ 100 subdomains 1+500 subdomains 1+500 subdomains
SSL Included Included Included
Anti-DDoS protection Included Included Included
Anti-malware protection Included Included Included
Email accounts 250 500 1000
Customer support Phone and Online support Phone and Online support Phone and Online support
Choice of server location The USA only The USA only The USA only
Free Automated back-ups No Yes Yes

From what we can see, Basic and Advanced plans will fit perfectly for small business, but they might lack scalability in case you grow. The premier plan should fit even a larger eCommerce or business website with no problem.

Yahoo Hosting Review - Features And Performance

Yahoo Small Business claims to offer all-in-one solutions for businesses that are getting started. For that, it offers web design toolkit, security, and reliability.

So in this part of Yahoo hosting review, we'll test just that.

User-Friendly Website Creator

A key selling point of Yahoo Small Business service is that it allows you to design, as well as host, your website. The website builder was a feature I was excited to test.

In short, I found that the website creator worked well and was a definite bonus to the Yahoo hosting package. Although it's not as responsive as the editors of competitors such as Squarespace or Wix, it's certainly easy to use. A drag-and-drop design makes modifying page layouts and adding content straightforward.

Yahoo Small Business Review Website Editor

In the Yahoo Small Business website builder, you'll also find a wide range of responsive templates to base your site on. Generally, I found these to be of high-quality and thought they looked good on both mobile and desktop browsers.

Comprehensive Feature Set

Yahoo Small Business Review Install WordPressNote that you don't have to use the Yahoo website creator. Yahoo Small Business servers also come with support for MySQL databases.

That means you can also use an alternative Content Management Systems (CMS), such as WordPress or eCommerce platforms like Magento to create your website.

In fact, I was impressed by the sheer number of different features included with my hosting account which included SEO analytics, support for PHP and Perl development, and email hosting.

Frustrating Customer Support

Yahoo Small Business offers 24/7 phone, chat, and email support. But not everything is as nice as it looks like.

During my Yahoo Small Business review, the main problem I ran into was poor customer support.

Although there's a fairly comprehensive support database, the staff I spoke to through the 24/7 ticket service and over the phone were not helpful. Checking out other Yahoo Small Business reviews, it became clear that this was a systemic problem with the service.

Yahoo Small Business Review Other Customers

Bear in mind, if you choose Yahoo Small Business, you might need some patience with its customer support.

Yahoo Small Business hosting performance

Yahoo Small Businees does not have any strong claims about its performance. But perhaps you do need to brag to offer great service?

After testing Yahoo servers we found, that it's actually pretty good. Although the testing tool graded it C+, none of the locations stepped over industry average 553ms mark. And that is great.

The US and Europe response times are also great - none of them reach 100ms. Other continents are a bit slower, averaging at 366ms.

yahoo small business review performance

This is performance is good and above average, so seems you would be in good hands choosing Yahoo hosting.

But once we look at the uptime, the true face of Yahoo Small Business shows. Although the provider promises 99.9% uptime, it does not really keep its promise. In the last 30 days, the average uptime was only 99.80%.

Yahoo Small Business Pros

Yahoo Small Business offers some features with their hosting packages that serve as added advantages to the hosting service. These include:

Above average performance - although Yahoo Small Business does not brag about its performance, it is well above the industry average. In case you are looking for that - Yahoo hosting can deliver.

Website builder - for beginner users, Yahoo Small Business features a user-friendly website builder with a bunch of responsive templates. This way, you can create a website without learning a line of code.

Yahoo Small Business Cons

This Yahoo Small Business review has revealed several downsides of this hosting provider. These downsides include:

The absence of Sophisticated Hosting Packages - Yahoo Small Business lacks the advanced hosting packages such as cloud hosting, dedicated hosting, VPS, or reseller hosting. With the absence of these, the web hosting power is very limited and will not offer scalability when you need it.

Poor Support - Yahoo hosting features 24/7 live chat, phone, and email support. But you'll most likely need some patience in case you want to actually get help. The agents, as many user reviews revealed, seem to be unequipped to solve problems.

Uptime Guarantee - a website uptime is a very essential hosting element. Yahoo Small Business web hosting promises 99.9% uptime. Hence, if your site goes down, your customers will be unable to find you or access your products and services hosted by Yahoo Small Business hosting packages. This Yahoo Small Business review has revealed that the situation is not as possitive. Yahoo hosting averages at 99.80% uptime.

Yahoo Small Business Review - the Verdict

Without mincing words, Yahoo Small Business offers highly accessible site-building tools and excellent performance.

However, this Yahoo Small Business review revealed the absence of high-end and sophisticated hosting packages which, coupled with its average uptime makes it not a right fit for high-traffic sites.

Moreover, there are other excellent hosting providers in the market for you to try out. Some of these feature better services than Yahoo Small Business, hence you have to look out for the one that best fit your business’ needs.

  • Above average response time
  • Great website builder

  • Lack of scalable plans
  • Poor uptime

They do not even offer contact forms with captcha to prevent spamming. Getting spammed daily from website contact forms. They tell you to go find the code yourself/ Is this not a very basic offering when paying for webhosting? Also if you are redirecting from an od website to a new yahoo webhosted site their SSL certificate is invalid. People get a website insecure message.

Invest small amount of money that it would change your life if you lose that bet and fail a few times then you will get better at it. Think of jump in the pool wanting to compete with the race but you don’t know how to swim yet. You can have great idea from reading the books on how to win the race but you need to learn how to swim first. Practice and practice + failure and failure = you may win it.

Be wary of unlimited offers. Some hosting providers offer so-called unlimited storage and bandwidth for a few dollars a month. This deal often isn’t what it seems to be. If you pay three bucks a month for hosting, there will likely be something in your terms of service allowing your hosting provider to either throttle your performance or shut you down after a certain usage level.
