Akamai was founded in 1998 by a graduate student and a professor from MIT. It's fair to say that the project has been a success - as now it has an annual turnover of over $2.5 billion.

So what services, exactly, does this internet giant offer and is it worth your attention? Find out in this Akamai review.

What is Akamai?

Akamai is an enormous internet company that operates over 240,000 servers worldwide. In the past, Akamai has partnered with some of the largest names in tech, including both Microsoft and Apple. Its services power some of the internet's biggest websites, including Hulu.

This company is firmly tailored towards meeting the needs of large-scale enterprise businesses. Akamai doesn't specialize in one single product but instead offers a range of services based on various Akamai patented technologies:

  • Akamai Intelligent Edge Platform: A cloud-connected network of servers located in 120 different countries.
  • Content Delivery Process: Akamai has its own method of mirroring website HTML and CSS elements.
  • Peer to Peer Networking: Lets users download large files directly from peers outside Akamai's network.

Akamai CDN: First Impressions

The Akamai Content Delivery Network (CDN) is probably the best known Akamai product.

That's partly because Akamai was one of the first internet service companies to develop a CDN. I was impressed with the size of Akamai CDN's server network which even includes a server location in Antarctica!

Not For Beginners

When I added Akamai CDN to my website, it immediately became clear that this was a product aimed at enterprise users who are able to employ their own web developer. Setup is complex and the UI could do with an update to make it more accessible to first-time users.

Fantastic Support

You can bet that Akamai didn't get to where it is today without some excellent customer support. I'm happy to report that the advisors I spoke to through Akamai's 24/7 phone and live chat support service were courteous and knowledgeable. Additionally, I was able to reach support every time I called.

Akamai CDN Performance: Big Speed Increases

If you choose to partner with Akamai, the big advantage your readers will notice is improved site load speeds. When a user opens your website, instead of downloading information directly from your server, they'll actually get it from a nearby Akamai platform node.

After I'd added Akamai CDN to my website, a test with Bitcatcha revealed that the speeds for a website have improved significantly.

Akamai DDOS and Other Akamai Products

Akamai also specializes in web security and offers a range of products designed to protect your data from various forms of hacking. These include a Direct Denial of Service (DDOS) attack prevention tool, IP blocking, and restricted enterprise portal web visibility.

Akamai Pricing

You won't find standardized pricing information on Akamai's website. Because of its high-powered target market, Akamai tailors its solutions and prices to the individual needs and industry of each client.

Akamai Review Industry

To receive a quote, you should contact Akamai's sales team directly. If you are interested in the Akamai CDN product, expect to pay approximately industry standard prices, which hover between $0.02 and $0.04 per GB of transferred data.

Final Thoughts

Akamai CDN might well be the world's most advanced content delivery network, and it's worth considering if you care about speeding up your website above all else.

Although its pricing information isn't public, Akamai's past client list strongly suggests its services aren't affordable for mid-size enterprise operations. Small businesses should consider using CloudFlare CDN instead.
