Pingdom is a website monitoring service developed by SolarWinds.
Since its creation in 2007, nearly a million users have used Pingdom to check their server performance.
Pingdom allows you to monitor in-depth website data in real-time. But how well does it work? And is the price worth it? In this Pingdom review, we're going to find out just that.
What is Pingdom?
Pingdom's name is a reference to network 'pings' which are queries used to check computer connections. Essentially, that's what Pingdom does on a much larger scale. Pingdom monitoring software can measure all the following stats of your website:
- Page Speeds: How long it takes them to load.
- Transaction Reports: Check if functions like signup forms are operational.
- Visitor Insights: See where your readers are located.
- Uptime Check: Ensure your server is accessible.
The first thing to strike me was how user-friendly the Pingdom monitoring interface was. Although the dashboard presents you with a lot of information, it's not confusing thanks to a well thought-out layout. I could immediately see why this service has attracted high-profile clients (including huge companies like Facebook and Spotify).
Creating a check to constantly monitor my site was easy too. A simple wizard allowed me to select options such as check interval length and testing location.
Mobile Pingdom Monitoring
I was impressed with Pingdom's mobile application which is nearly as powerful as the desktop interface. I tested it on an Android phone, which worked well. However, Apple users should note that the iOS app has significantly worse ratings.
API Integration For Developers
Although the standard Pingdom interface is accessible for beginners, advanced users will be happy to know that Pingdom supports Application Program Interface (API) requests. These will allow you to incorporate Pingdom monitoring into existing server-side applications.
High-Quality Customer Support
You'll find the answer to most Pingdom configuration issues in its extensive tutorial library. But, if you prefer, it's also possible to contact support representatives through a ticket system, or by phone. However, the phone line is open for 8 hours daily.
With monthly prices starting at $14.95/month, Pingdom certainly isn't cheap.
There are four pricing tiers, each one includes a different number of monitoring checks per month:
- Starter: $14.95/month
- Standard: $45.95/month
- Advanced: $89.95/month
- Professional: $249/month
Note that these are the paid-monthly prices. You can save by opting for annual billing instead.
Pingdom Plans in More Detail
Let's take a closer look at what's included with each plan:
|Check Interval||1 Minute||1 Minute||1 Minute||1 Minute|
|Check Interval||10 Minutes||10 Minutes||10 Minutes||5 Minutes|
|Free Trial Period||14-Days||14-Days||14-Days||14-Days|
|Customer Support||Tickets and Phone||Tickets and Phone||Tickets and Phone||Tickets and Phone|
For most users, the Starter plan will be adequate as it includes ten uptime checks that refresh once a minute for the duration of your plan. The main limitation of the Starter package is the lack of threshold alerts. These inform you whenever your page load times hit a certain length.
Pingdom Review: Final Thoughts
Pingdom is a powerful software package that's suitable for both beginners and advanced users thanks to its user-friendly mobile application and API support.
Expensive prices are its only downside. Still, if you care about your website's performance, I definitely recommend taking advantage of Pingdom's 14-day free trial.
