As mobile browsing surpasses desktop traffic, it's more essential than ever to optimize your website for mobile web users.

Google's Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) is a project that lets website owners improve their page's mobile loading speeds.

The AMP WordPress plugin makes optimized mobile pages accessible to anyone. So, whether you're hoping to improve the user experience or please Google on loading speeds, it's worth knowing how to maximize the use of AMP.

In this tutorial, I'll overview the best way to set everything up. Here are the steps you need to take to get AMP on your WordPress site:

  1. Head to the 'Add New' section of your 'Plugins' tab
  2. Search 'AMP' in the plugin search bar
  3. Install the AMP WordPress plugin
  4. Activate the AMP WordPress plugin
  5. Confirm AMP settings

1. Head to the 'Add New' Section of Your 'Plugins' Tab

After logging into your website's WordPress admin account, head to the dashboard on the left-hand side of your WordPress homepage. Here you will find the 'Plugins' tab. As you scroll over the 'Plugins' tab, the option 'Add New' will appear on the right-hand side.

Click 'Add New' to redirect yourself to the WordPress plugins database. Here you will be able to search for the AMP WordPress plugin.

2. Search 'AMP' in the Plugin Search Bar

On the top right-hand side of the page, search for 'AMP'. Several results will appear, make sure you're using the plugin pictured in the image below.

Once the correct plugin appears, you'll see a button titled 'Install Now.' Click this button to install the AMP WordPress plugin on your WordPress dashboard. And don't worry, it only takes a matter of seconds for the plugin to finish installing.

4. Activate the AMP WordPress Plugin

After a few seconds, the 'Install Now' button will change to an 'Activate' button. Click this button to activate the AMP plugin on your WordPress site.

Note: If you don't want to activate the plugin immediately, you don't have to. You can always activate the plugin from the plugins dashboard after it's installed.

5. Confirm AMP Settings

Now it's time to ensure your settings are applied correctly. Start by clicking the 'AMP' button on the main left-hand-side WordPress dashboard.

Here you will be able to control template mode and the types of content you want to be included in your AMP site. At the top of the page, the 'Template Mode' heading provides you with three different choices: Native, Paired, and Classic.

Under the 'Supported Templates' tab, you can choose the type of content you want to be included in the AMP page. This allows you to differentiate between posts, media, and entire pages. This provides needed control of your AMP articles.

Additional Step: Reversing the AMP WordPress Plugin

Don't worry if AMP isn't living up to your expectations. If you want to reverse AMP on your WordPress site, you can quickly deactivate it by heading to the 'Installed Plugins' tab under the main menu's 'Plugins' button. Here you can select 'Deactivate' on any of your current plugins.
