If you like using Netflix, you probably know there are different content lists in different countries. Typically, the United States is known for having the best Netflix content in the world. And often, there's great location-specific content in other countries as well.
But in order to access all the content Netflix has to offer, you need to have a VPN which allows you to travel all around the world without once leaving your couch.
Well, I've done all the testing for you. Here are the best VPN for Netflix users:
- NordVPN (Impressive speeds and affordability)
- ExpressVPN (Extensive country and server list)
- TorGuard (US-based VPN with great performance)
- Hotspot Shield (Low price tag and great speeds)
Prices start at: $2.99/month
If you're looking for a VPN packed with features, NordVPN is popularly known as one of the best Netflix VPNs on the market. This Panama-based VPN service is located offshore to give you an extra layer of data protection.
I tested its Netflix capabilities across multiple servers. It's one of the few VPNs on the market that was able to beat Netflix's firewalls consistently and access overseas content. Whether you live overseas, or you're traveling and want access to your home's Netflix content, this VPN has you covered.
Ready for 4K content
NordVPN also has plenty of speed, that's crucial if you wish to stream super high definition content. I tested its servers in multiple jurisdictions to see what type of download speeds the VPN provided.
All VPNs slow down your internet speed, but NordVPN does an excellent job of retaining most of it.
After connecting to NordVPNs primary servers, my download speed was around 71 Mbps (it was around 80Mbps before the test). The download speed retention rate of about 90% is one of the best in the industry. And ping/jitter times are virtually nonexistent, making this a very reiable option for steady streaming.
If you have internet that can easily handle Netflix streaming, you won't run into any problems when you connect to NordVPN.
Access Netflix from around the world
NordVPN also provides an extensive server list in countries around the world. You can access over 5,000 servers in 62 different countries - plenty speed to take advantage of overseas Netflix catalogs.
Better yet, with tons of different servers in each country, if one isn't working, you can just switch to another in the NordVPN user interface!
Price - a fraction of the cost of Netflix
If you're already paying for Netflix, you don't want to spend too much more money on a VPN to access their content. Some VPN providers have a monthly cost that exceeds your Netflix subscription price.
Fortunately, NordVPN is the most affordable VPN in the industry - its prices start at just $2.99. But there's one catch - you need to sign up for a multi-year subscription if you want to take advantage of its best price points.
- Seamless access to Netflix servers
- Fast download speeds
- Offshore jurisdiction
- Excellent reputation
- Best prices in the industry
- The best prices are only available for multi-year subscriptions
Prices start at: $8.32/month
ExpressVPN is another big name in the VPN industry. This high-end VPN service is also located in a privacy-friendly offshore jurisdiction - the British Virgin Islands.
It also happens to be another example of a VPN service that can bypass Netflix restrictions on content. I tested its servers on Netflix and was able to access Netflix content in the UK, USA, Australia, and more.
Even more country locations
ExpressVPN offers its clients access to over 140 cities in 94 countries.
While it provides 3,000 fewer servers than NordVPN, there are still more than enough server options with ExpressVPN.
This is your best VPN option if you want flexibility in terms of location. You won't find a better country list on the market.
Good for streaming HD content
My ExpressVPN speed test shows why you can trust this VPN service to keep your streams running smoothly.
My normal internet speed of 80Mbps was reduced to 61.1Mbps. The over 75% retention rate is a decent one - especially if you're starting out with a speedy internet connection in the first place.
- High-end speed retention
- One of the most extensive countries lists in the industry
- Reliable connection
- One of the most expensive options - starts at $8.32
Prices start at: $5.95/month
If you want to work with a VPN provider located in the United States, TorGuard is one of your best options. This VPN provider doesn't offer the same jurisdictional privacy, but you have the assurances of working with a domestic company if you're located in America.
In terms of streaming Netflix, this is one of the few US-based providers that can assure constant access to Netflix and other overseas content providers. All of its servers were able to access Netflix when I tried to access overseas content providers.
Performance up to par
TorGuard reduced my download speed from around 80Mbps to just over 53 Mbps.
While the retention rate is just a bit over 65%, it's still much better than many VPNs on the market.
Not on the top of this list - but still good.
No-logs, no worries
Aside from having decent download speeds, TorGuard also has an excellent no-log policy. This means they don't keep track of any of your web traffic or IP addresses.
While streaming content isn't a big deal for foreign servers, if you want to use P2P networks, anonymity is a good feature.
All of these features don't come with a big price tag - you can start protecting your network with TorGuard from just $5.95/month.
- Great no-log policy
- US-based if you want domestic-based VPN
- Affordable prices
- Not as fast as the other VPNs on this list
- If you want an offshore VPN, this isn't an option
Prices start at: $3.49/month
Hotspot Shield is the lesser known service on my best VPN for Netflix list. This VPN provider is the product of another US-based VPN provider - it boasts over 600m users. In addition, it's one of the most affordable VPN providers - the price tag of $3.49/month (if you sign up with a 3-year contract) won't hurt your bank account.
Like all the other VPNs on this list, Hotspot Shield offers easy access to Netflix. I tested servers in various locations and didn't experience any issues with Netflix or Hulu - another popular online media provider.
Impressive speed results
At the end of the day, the best part about Hotspot Shield is its download speeds. This VPN provider that was able to retain 78% of my download speed. My internet speed was still 62.7Mbps after accessing Hotspot Shield's VPN servers.
If you don't have fast internet, this is a great option. And the ping/jitter times were the best of this list, too.
You can stream HD content using this provider, even if your internet is sub-par.
The other features are less than impressive
Hotspot Shield faces allegations of leaking private information to authorities. If privacy is a major concern, I would choose a different VPN provider.
- Great download speeds
- Seamless access to Netflix and other content providers
- Affordable price points
- Privacy rumors imply this VPN provider isn't entirely safe
Best VPN for Netflix - Which One Suits Your Needs?
You should always aim to buy the VPN that is best tailored to your personal interests - all four of the VPNs in this list offer different advantages:
- NordVPN is best for those who want a highly functional VPN at an affordable price.
- ExpressVPN is best for those who want a premium VPN with a large country list.
- TorGaurd is best for those who want a US-based VPN with plenty of performance.
- Hotspot Shield is best for those who want a VPN at a great price.
How to use a VPN with Netflix?
- Activate your VPN. Once you finally choose a VPN of your preference, you need to activate it and change your IP. The method on how to do it varies from platform to platform - but it always includes starting the application and following the given instructions.
- See if the IP switch was successful. Once the VPN says you're connected, check your IP address, to see whether your online location has changed.
If it has - you may start Netflix! I suggest not having your Netflix on, as you're changing your IP. That's because Netflix might spot you changing it and see that as suspicious behavior.
But if you do everything right - you should already see Netflix, complete with the selection from the location of your choice. If it doesn't work, don't worry - just try out a new IP or even a new location. Netflix is always on the run, trying to ban IPs from VPNs, so it's very likely that the one you used, simply got banned. But as practice comes to show, there's always a way back in!
So there you have it - this is how you use a VPN with Netflix.
