The Best Canada VPN – Privacy and Safety, Guaranteed

If you're based in Canada, you might be looking for a VPN provider that can help protect your online data.

It's well-known that Canada is part of the Five Eyes Jurisdiction - a group of Western nations that shares information and intelligence. This means that your online web traffic may be shared with your government or other Western countries.

So, in order to stay private and secure in the country, a VPN service located outside the Western jurisdiction is a perfect solution.

But finding the perfect option isn't always easy - which is why I've done the work for you. Below are the best Canada VPN services on the market:

1. NordVPN

Prices start at: $2.99/month

NordVPN is a Panama-based VPN provider that offers services to Canadian web users. You can use NordVPN to encrypt (AES 256-bit) your web traffic and access overseas content.

It's also an excellent service for gamers and torrent users. Best of all - starting at $2.99, it's one of the cheapest high-end VPNs on the market.

Offshore jurisdiction and no logs

If you want to avoid issues relating to the Five Eyes Jurisdiction, NordVPN is a reliable option. The Panama headquarters of this company keeps this VPN service far out of the reach of most Western nations.

Panama is not known to have any data sharing agreements or strong anti-privacy laws.

On top of that, NordVPN has a strict no-log policy. While all VPN providers claim not to log information, it's rare to find one that abides by its promises. Fortunately, this VPN service doesn’t keep any record of your web traffic or IP address information.

Access to media outside of Canada

While you can use NordVPN servers to access secure servers within Canada, you can also use its overseas servers to log in from other areas around the world. NordVPN servers work seamlessly with Hulu and Netflix - I tested servers in various locations to ensure they could bypass media geography locks.

You can also use this feature to access video game releases in different countries. Not only can you take advantage of earlier release dates - you may even be able to take advantage of lower prices!

At the same time, you can always use a NordVPN Canada server. It will allow you to access all of your favorite moose-related content, but without your internet service provider and government watching behind your back.

Retain your download speeds no matter where you log in from

nordvpn speedtestNordVPN also offers plenty of performance for those who need high download speeds. While all VPNs slow down the internet connection, NordVPN offers one of the highest speed retention rates in the industry.

My download speed of 80Mbps only fell to around 71Mbps. With almost 90% speed retention on offer,  NordVPN has a lot to offer.

PROS

  • Offers a huge server list
  • High speeds
  • No-log policy
  • Outside of Five Eyes Jurisdiction
  • Excellent prices

CONS

  • You have to purchase a long-term plan if you want the best

2. ExpressVPN

Prices start at: $8.32/month

ExpressVPN is another major VPN provider worldwide - as a Canadian resident, you have access to this VPN and its range of international servers.

ExpressVPN is currently located in the British Virgin Islands. This ensures its jurisdiction is outside the influence and privacy laws of Canada - I always prefer to work with offshore VPN providers if safety is a priority.

No logs and strong encryption tunnels

ExpressVPN is on a small list of VPN providers that genuinely offers a no-log policy. It's hard to find VPN companies that stick to their promises in terms of logging data - ExpressVPN currently doesn't log any of your IP information connection data.

It also offers military-grade AES 256-bit encryption. This is the perfect feature if you want to create a secure tunnel for your web traffic and IP address.

Countries around the globe

ExpressVPN has the largest number of country options on my Canadian VPN list. You can choose from 94 different countries when you use its platform.

Canada VPN ExpressVPN Server Locations

If you need to access every corner of the globe, ExpressVPN has your back. It also has multiple servers located within Canada if you're merely trying to hide your local IP address.

Plenty of speed and content

expressvpn speedtestYou won't need to worry about slowing down your internet speed when you use ExpressVPN.

After running tests, I found my speed only reduced from 80Mbps to around 61Mbps.

A speed retention rate of over 75% is nothing to complain about.

ExpressVPN also provides seamless access to Hulu and Netflix. I tested multiple servers and country locations and didn't experience any hiccups.

PROS

  • No-log policy
  • Fast performance
  • Outside of Five Eyes Jurisdiction
  • Largest country list on the market

CONS

  • Highest prices on this list

3. Private Internet Access (PIA)

Prices start at: $2.91/month

Private Internet Access is a US-based VPN provider with a large subscriber list around the world. It offers a log-free user experience that ensures none of your data is stored.

The only safety downside is that it's based in the United States. The USA is another Five Eyes Jurisdiction country - meaning it's very likely to share information or data with Canada if needed.

Regardless, the no-log policy at PIA reduces your risk significantly - and it's packed with other features.

Choose your own encryption

Private Internet Access is one of the only VPNs that allows you to choose your own encryption standards. You can choose between two world-class encryption protocols - AES 256-bit and AES 128-bit.

Canada VPN Private Internet Access Encryption

While AES 256-bit is considered the gold standard in VPN encryption, you can switch to AES 128-bit if you want to increase your VPN's performance. PIA provides recommendations to help you decide on which encryption standard is best for your web traffic.

Plenty of servers and torrent support

At PIA, you have plenty of servers to choose from - there are over 3,000 servers on offer. Unfortunately, its country list is rather small; there are less than 35 available.

Regardless, PIA supports torrenting on its platform. If you enjoy using P2P networks, but you want to keep your downloads and uploads anonymous, this is a reliable option.

Canada VPN Private Internet Access Torrent Features

The most affordable high-end VPN in Canada

While Private Internet Access has plenty of excellent features and options, it's also the most affordable VPN on my list. You won't be able to find a cheaper VPN if you value performance and security.

If you purchase a two-year plan at PIA, you'll be able to take advantage of a $2.91 per month cost. The only disadvantage is that you have to pay for the entire service upfront.

pia vpn speedtestIn addition, PIA has decent download speeds.

While it can't compete with NordVPN and ExpressVPN, the speed retention rate of about 70% is not a bad result.

My 80Mbps connection fell to 57.2Mbps when using PIA.

While this shouldn't impact your browsing and streaming experience, if you're looking for high speeds - try NordVPN or ExpressVPN.

Not all is perfect at PIA

While PIA has some of the best features on the market, there are a few problems with its service.

While its biggest downfall is its US-based jurisdiction, PIA also doesn't offer support for Netflix and Hulu. While the VPN claims to access content from these popular providers, my tests concluded otherwise. You won't have any luck streaming overseas Netflix on PIA servers.

PROS

  • Provides secure no-log policy
  • Offers various strong encryption options
  • Large server list
  • Torrenting fully supported
  • Very affordable

CONS

  • The cheapest option is with a multi-year plan
  • Not many country options
  • Located in the United States

4. ProtonVPN

Prices start at: free!

ProtonVPN is another VPN provider located outside of the Five Eyes Jurisdiction - this popular VPN service is currently headquartered in Switzerland.

Not only is it located outside of Canada's Five Eye Jurisdiction, but it also employs a strict no-log policy. You won't need to worry about any of your data or information being stored on its servers.

Security is ProtonVPN's priority

If your primary concern is safety, ProtonVPN is one of your best options. The company was started by the same safety experts that brought you ProtonMail - one of the most popular encrypted email services on the market.

Canada VPN ProtonVPN ProtonMail

ProtonMail has grown rapidly in the past few years and now has millions of users. ProtonVPN aims to provide the same end-to-end encryption that's employed in the email service.

This, partnered with its no-log policy and jurisdiction, make it one of the safest VPNs on the market for Canadians.

Stream online content

protonvpn speedtestIf you want to stream overseas content, or simply keep your data moving fast while connected in Canada, you won't have any issues with ProtonVPN.

After connecting to some of its primary servers, my internet speed reduced from 80Mbps to 58.6Mbps.

This is around 73% speed retention - plenty of power for streaming online content.

I was also able to access Netflix's content via various ProtonVPN servers without any issues at all.

Free Canada VPN

Canada VPN ProtonVPN Free PlanThere are plenty of free VPNs available on the internet.

But many of these services use dodgy practices, log your data, sell your information, or offer poor encryption standards. ProtonVPN doesn't suffer from these malicious practices.

The only downside to ProtonVPN's free option is that it doesn't have as many features - you only have access to three servers and one device.

Nevertheless, it's a good opportunity to try the service before investing.

PROS

  • Strong security and encryption
  • Strict no-logging policy
  • Located outside of Five Eyes Jurisdiction
  • Allows access to Netflix
  • A free plan is available

CONS

  • Not as many servers as some other VPNs
