PureVPN Review – Does This Provider Really Offer It All?

If you've been researching VPNs, there's a high chance you've heard of PureVPN. This Hong Kong-based company has made a name for itself as one of the largest VPN providers in the industry.

Although the name seems to provide a sense of credibility, in my PureVPN review we will have a look at whether it's a service that's actually worth buying.

How Safe is PureVPN?

Safety is a primary concern for many VPN users. If you look at various VPN providers, you'll find a lot of security promises in the industry. Almost every VPN provider promises to keep your data secure, and many also promise to have a strong 'no-log' policy. However, the truth is often a little bit different.

First things first, it's important to check out its jurisdiction: PureVPN headquarters is in Hong Kong. While this is outside of the prying eyes of the United States and its allies, China's control of Hong Kong is also slightly worrying. Still, Hong Kong is a better jurisdiction than you find with some of the other VPN providers.

PureVPNs logging policy is also an essential component of online safety. PureVPN claims it doesn't log any data and clearly outlines the information which it doesn't log on its privacy policy.

But while this is a solid foundation, PureVPN does log other information as is seen in another area of its privacy policy:

So, while this isn't a complete no-logging policy, it's certainly better than some other competitors.

FBI Cooperation Allegations

Unfortunately, there are allegations that PureVPN helped the FBI in a recent inquiry. It appears the FBI used PureVPN's logs to help find an internet stalker, which indicates that PureVPN may be logging more information than it declares, while it also appears to be willing to cooperate with authorities.

While it is good news that an internet stalker was caught, that's beside the point. This story is an indication that PureVPN may leave you exposed.

PureVPN Encryption

PureVPN allows you to customize your encryption based on the amount of protection and performance you need. If you're more concerned with streaming content, you can choose the 'No Encryption' protocol that won't encrypt or slow your web traffic.

If you're looking to protect yourself on public WiFi or prevent people from snooping on your activities, you can use the AES 256-bit encryption or SSL encryption. Both of these encryption standards are considered to be some of the most secure encryption standards in the world, but they will slow down your connection.

So, is PureVPN safe? While its encryption is in-line with some of the best in the industry, rumors about FBI cooperation rule this VPN out as a safe option.

PureVPN Speed Test

purevpn speedtestTo find out the speed of PureVPN, I measured my online connection speeds with a VPN turned off and then measured it with PureVPN turned on.

Without a VPN, my internet download speed is around 70 Mbps.

However, once I connected to PureVPN, its best servers were able to retain around 74% of my internet speed, making my new top download speed was 52Mbps. The speed retention result is definitely above the VPN market average and shouldn't cause connectivity problems.

PureVPN Netflix Capabilities

Most of us enjoy a good tv show or movie and Netflix is the most popular platform to do so.

However, unfortunately, PureVPN won't help you with Netflix - I couldn't find a single server that would allow me to access the Netflix platform.

There are plenty of servers to choose from, however, but none of them seem to help sustain a proper connection without an error screen popping up.

PureVPN Torrenting - Is It Supported?

Fortunately for torrent users, PureVPN openly promotes torrent use on its platforms.

This is a benefit for PureVPN, especially seeing how more and more VPN providers are beginning to limit or completely stop P2P connections.

PureVPN torrent support is one of the few positive features I found in this service.

PureVPN Server Locations

One of PureVPNs strongest features is its number of servers - PureVPN has over 2,000 servers in over 80 different countries! This means that you can log in from almost any corner of the globe.

People often overlook server locations when deciding on a new VPN, however, if you plan on logging into servers in various regions, then the more servers the better.

PureVPN Customer Support

PureVPN Review Customer SupportIn general, PureVPN reviews have a mixed (at best) opinion on its customer support. However, what I found, was vastly different.

PureVPN has an extensive customer support center with all the resources you need to fix minor problems.

You can also contact its customer care team via email or live chat. As you can see to the left, I messaged its live chat service and received an immediate response. A couple of questions later, I found no faults with how the service performed.

With 24/7 customer support and a wealth of online resources, I find it hard to fault PureVPNs customer care.

PureVPN Pricing

You can purchase PureVPN in three different subscription lengths: month-to-month, quarterly, or annually. There's a huge difference in price depending on the length of your subscription. Prices range from $10.95 a month to $2.99 a month.

Annually$35.88 ($64.95 at renewal)

If you choose a quarterly or annual plan, you have to pay for the entire package upfront. Interestingly enough, even though the prices are very different, the plan is going to be exactly the same. It's very clear to see that PureVPN absolutely want you to sign up for a year in advance.

If you want to try its service before you make a long commitment, PureVPN doesn't offer a free trial. But there is a 31-day money back guarantee on all of PureVPN's plans, which is just as good!

PureVPN Review: Is It Worth Your Money?

To put it in simple terms, PureVPN is worth your consideration, even if it's not perfect. If you purchase the annual plan then it has a solid price point, but there are several shortcomings.

PureVPN shows great speed retention results and has an extensive server list from all around the globe. However, it doesn't support Netflix streaming and it's logging policy isn't completely faultless.

So, is PureVPN good? It is. But it's not exactly the best. There are plenty of other great VPN providers that you may want to consider looking at first.
