TorGuard Review – The Ultimate Internet Freedom Package?

TorGuard has one of the most recognizable names in the VPN industry. The company positions itself as a premium option for protecting your IP address.

While other TorGuard reviews give this VPN the benefit of the doubt, I wanted my TorGuard review to go the extra mile to put its claims to the test. Is TorGuard really good? Or is it just some good marketing?

It's time to get forensic - VPN style!

First Things First - Is TorGuard Safe?

If you value your online privacy, VPN is a great way to keep your IP address and browsing data secure. There's only one catch: you have to choose the right VPN!

All VPNs claim they're the leaders of internet security - but the finer details don't always match these claims. It's essential to analyze a VPN provider's jurisdiction and data retention policy when determining if they're safe.

Unfortunately for TorGuard, it is located in the United States – one of the primary members of the Five Eyes Jurisdiction. The Five Eyes Jurisdiction is a group of Western nations that share data and information with one another.

I tend to prefer VPN services located outside of Western data sharing agreements.

But while TorGuard's jurisdiction is less than ideal, it's not all bad news…

The TorGuard logging policy explicitly details the company doesn't collect any critical data about you or your browsing history. This being said, it does mention it cooperates with authorities when legally required to do so.

What About TorGuard's Technical Safety Features?

TorGuard offers users multiple different encryption options - it also makes suggestions on which encryption standards best protect users from prying eyes (all while maintaining performance).

TorGuard Review Encryption

The AES 256-bit encryption standard is considered one of the most advanced in the world - US Government agencies previously used it to encrypt sensitive information. If you want a reliable encryption 'tunnel' to hide your data and browsing history, using AES 256-bit or AES 128-bit encryption are both excellent options.

256-bit is more secure, 128-bit offers better performance. And it's good to see TorGuard offer you an option to choose which of the two features you value more.

So, is TorGuard safe? While the company does have a good logging policy, its location in the United States means it's not one of the safest options on the market. Fortunately, it offers some of the most secure encryption choices on the market.

TorGuard Speed Test

torguard speed testI undertook a TorGuard speed test to assess what type of speeds you can expect from its VPN servers.

So, what were the results?

TorGuard's speed was quite impressive – I was able to reach the maximum download speed of 53.2Mbps and 49.8Mbps upload.

My normal download speed is 70Mbps, so TorGuard offers around a 70% speed retention rate.

This is as good as the top services on the market, and fast enough to stream content and download large files.

TorGuard Netflix Capabilities

In recent years, content providers like Netflix have caved to pressure from content producers. They no longer allow overseas users to access the same content as other jurisdictions.

Fortunately, TorGuard is one of the few VPNs I've tested that is able to bypass Netflix's geo-locked content.

I tested Netflix on servers in various different countries: while some servers didn't work, it's easy to switch servers and gain access to Netflix via the TorGuard user interface

TorGuard Netflix capabilities appear to be much better than the average VPN. Keep in mind that this can change – it's always essential to check for yourself immediately after buying if a VPN service is still able to access Netflix.

Does TorGuard Support Torrenting?

vpn torrenting supported

Considering the name TorGuard implies a relationship with torrents or the Tor browser, you'd hope this VPN provider would support torrents on its platform.

Fortunately, TorGuard torrents are supported on its various servers.

uTorrent and other P2P platforms work perfectly with TorGuard servers. This is a great benefit for those who plan on using P2P platforms to download content.

TorGuard Server Locations

TorGuard is a great option if you value the number of servers you have access to. The company has over 3,000 servers in over 50 countries.

TorGuard Review Server Locations

If you want to take full advantage of a VPN, you need a provider that has servers in all corners of the world. This means you'll be able to access the internet from almost every region on the globe.

These numbers place TorGuard near the top of the industry in terms of servers.

TorGuard Customer Support

TorGuard Review Live Chat

If you need to get in contact with TorGuard's customer support team, you have a host of different options.

You can choose to submit an online support ticket or contact its 24/7 live chat service.

It's not rare that so-called 24/7 live chats redirect you to some kind of ticket or email support, and you have to wait 10 minutes or so for the answer.

This was not the case at all

I sent a message through its live chat portal and within seconds received a response from an emoji named Daniel.

With a great live chat portal and plenty of online resources, it's hard to find any problems with the TorGuard customer care department.

TorGuard Pricing

You can purchase TorGuard in four different subscription lengths: monthly, quarterly, bi-annually, and annually.

The longer the subscription you choose, the cheaper the per-month cost. Prices range from $9.99 a month to $5.00 a month, depending on the package.

Period Price
Monthly $9.99
Quarterly $19.99
Semi-annually $29.99
Annually $59.99

These price points make TorGuard a pretty affordable VPN option - but only if you purchase one of the longer subscriptions upfront.

Now, if you're thinking of purchasing a year subscription to save money, can you try the service for free before making a financial commitment?

Fortunately, TorGuard is one of the few VPN providers that offer a free trial. You can access a TorGuard free trial for seven days without paying for a subscription.

TorGuard Review Conclusion: A Viable Option

Overall, TorGuard is a pretty good option to pick. The primary upside of TorGuard is its internet speeds. It's fast enough and won't have a significant impact on your computer's performance. Its users enjoy it, too - an overwhelming majority of the features in my TorGuard review are positive.

While TorGuard's jurisdiction isn't perfect, its logging policy is secure enough to warrant approval. Also, its media capabilities are some of the best in the business – and you'll never have a shortage of servers to choose from.

So, if you're able to get over the USA-based jurisdiction, TorGuard's upsides mean that it is indeed a pretty good VPN solution.
