Best VPN Free Trial Options – Try Before You Buy

vpn-free-trial

Don't like purchasing a product without trying it first? Only looking to get temporary access to a VPN? Well, you're not alone. Unfortunately, though, many VPN providers want you to pay to try their services. But that doesn't mean you can't find exceptions!

In fact, there are a few top quality VPNs that allow you to test their services free of charge - you just need to do some digging.

Fortunately, I've done it for you. These are the top performing VPN free trial options below:

1. TorGuard

Free trial for: 7 days

VPN Free Trial TorGuard Free Trial

TorGuard is one of the most popular US-based VPN providers in the industry. This VPN provider is known for providing access to overseas content, as well as having full support for P2P networks.

TorGuard offers all new customers a 7 day trial period. This means you can test its servers, performance, and features for a full week before having to pay.

Media-friendly VPN provider

If you're planning on using your VPN to download or stream online content, TorGuard is one of your best options. The firm provides complete support for torrenting on its servers - the 'Tor' in TorGuard stands for torrents!

I tested TorGuard on both Hulu and Netflix to see if it could bypass firewalls to access content. Fortunately, TorGuard was able to access overseas servers - it's an excellent VPN if you want to take advantage of foreign content.

You won't have any problems streaming content either - as long as your normal internet speed is fast enough to download content.

After testing TorGuard's servers I was able to retain around 65% of my internet speed (which originally was around 80Mbps). While this isn't perfect, it's enough for browsing and streaming at an average speed.

A true no-log policy

TorGuard offers its clients a true no-log policy. While its jurisdiction in the United States isn't ideal, the firm's no-log policy is as solid as they come.

VPN Free Trial TorGuard Logging Policy

TorGuard doesn't collect or store any of your browsing data or web traffic history. This is a great layer of protection if you want to keep your online information hidden.

The value doesn't stop after the free trial

While various online services will entice you with a free trial to lock you into a longer deal, TorGuard's value for money doesn’t stop after the first week. The company offers plenty of payment packages at reasonable price points.

If you're willing to invest in a more extended subscription plan, you can access TorGuard's services for just $5.95 per month. This is some of the most affordable pricing in the industry.

PROS

  • Solid performance
  • Supported torrenting
  • Netflix and Hulu streaming
  • Affordable price
  • Free trial

CONS

  • Located in the United States

2. ProtonVPN

Offers a free plan, not only a trial

ProtonVPN is another major player in the VPN industry. Unlike TorGuard, ProtonVPN is located in Switzerland - this provides an added layer of protection since Switzerland has strict data protection laws.

VPN Free Trial ProtonVPN Free TrialProtonVPN is a step ahead of the game when it comes to free trials, too.

ProtonVPN doesn't offer a typical free trial - instead, it provides an entirely free service option.

You can use a reduced form of ProtonVPN's platform for as long as you want - it's the perfect way to trial its services before you pay.

While ProtonVPN's free service only offers you access to one device and three server locations, it will allow you to get a feel for its offering. And, of course, you can upgrade anytime.

The features may be limited (and understandably so) but compared to the limited trials offered by other companies, ProtonVPN goes a step further and that's always appreciated.

Data security - ProtonVPN's priority

If you want to keep your information securely online, using ProtonVPN is one of the best options. If you think ProtonVPN's name sounds familiar, that's because it does - the company was started by the same developers that brought ProtonMail.

ProtonMail's developers aimed to provide ProtonVPN with the same industry-leading data protection standards. If you dig a little deeper, you'll find that ProtonVPN has a rock-solid logging policy, offshore jurisdiction, and military grade AES 256-bit encryption to keep your data secure.

The safety that doesn't sacrifice performance

protonvpn speedtestWhile many VPNs aim to provide the same level of data security as ProtonVPN, few are able to maintain a high level of performance at the same time. Heavy encryption and data security standards can slow down VPN performance.

When I tested ProtonVPN with my normal internet speed, I found the speed retention rate of 73% (from 75Mbps to 58.6Mbps). That's not the best speed result in the industry, but taking into consideration strict security measures - it's a part of a very decent package.

You'll be able to stream and download HD content with ease. Accessing overseas content won't be an issue either - I tested ProtonVPNs servers with Netflix and was able to bypass the content provider's geography locks without any issues.

PROS

  • Strong performance - high-end speed retention
  • Streaming Netflix and Hulu
  • Industry-leading data security
  • Founded by security
  • Free option available permanently

CONS

  • The free option is very limited

3. VyprVPN

Free trial for: 3 days

vyprvpn main page

VyprVPN is owned by Golden Frog - a large data protection company based in Switzerland. Same as with ProtonVPN - that's an advantage because of the countries data privacy policies.

VyprVPN offers its customers a three-day trial to try out its services. While this is shorter than the other trial periods mentioned in this article, it's still enough time to know if you want to purchase a longer VyprVPN subscription.

Packed with performance

VyprVPN's primary benefit is its excellent performance. This VPN service provides seamless access to overseas Netflix servers and fully supports torrenting on its platform.

I tested Netflix and Hulu extensively using this VPN and didn't run into any problems accessing overseas content. The same rang true for uTorrent - VyprVPN offered excellent download speeds that allowed me to use the P2P network without any issues.

I tested its download speeds separately to gauge how much speed retention its servers offered. On VyprVPN's best servers, almost 90% of my download speed was retained (80Mbps to 70Mbps download). This is one of the best retention rates in the VPN industry.

If you want to use your VPN for media, this is another solid option!

In addition, VyprVPN offers one of the most extensive IP address lists on the market. You can take advantage of over 200,000 IP addresses - it's a great way to stay adaptable when browsing.

VyprVPN does log some information

Unfortunately, VyprVPN does log some of your information. This is despite the fact that it advertises a strict 'no-log' policy.

The company logs your IP address and other session information for 30 days. This can leave you exposed - it's not a reliable option if you're looking for top-of-the-line anonymity on the web.

PROS

  • Strong internet retention rates
  • Streaming Netflix
  • Strong torrent policy
  • Located in a good jurisdiction
  • A large amount of IP addresses

CONS

  • Not a true 'no-log' policy

4. Avast SecureLine VPN

Free trial for: 7 days

avast vpn main page

Avast SecureLine VPN is an online data security company based in Prague, Czech Republic. Again, this is another VPN that takes advantage of a jurisdiction that is thought to be outside of Western influence.

Avast SecureLineVPN allows you to trial its service for seven days before making a decision. That's plenty of time to decide if the service matches your needs.

avast vpn speedtestIn addition, this provider is torrent-friendly. Avast SecureLine VPN is a popular VPN service for people that use P2P networks.

The firm provides torrent-dedicated servers that are specifically optimized for torrent use.

I tested its servers with uTorrent and didn't have any problems downloading large files.

I also conducted a speed test on Avast SecureLine VPN. My normal download speed of 80Mbps was reduced to around 65Mbps - a pretty decent score.

As long as your normal internet speed can access online streams and files, you won't have any issues with Avast SecureLine VPN.

Avast SecureLine VPN's downfalls

While Avast SecureLine VPN does have one of the best free trials in the industry, as well as some excellent features, there are a few major pitfalls associated with its service.

First, Avast SecureLine VPN doesn't provide you with access to Netflix or many of the other top online content providers. I tested its servers extensively and was not able to consistently access Netflix or Hulu from any location.

Its server list is also rather small - you only have access to around 30 countries when you use Avast SecureLine VPN. This is nothing when you consider many top VPN providers offer more than 60 server locations - and sometimes thousands of server choices.

Last, but not least, Avast SecureLine VPN also logs some of your information - IP addresses and connection times. While this may not seem like a lot, it's certainly enough to expose you if authorities are looking through your online data.

PROS

  • Seven-day free trial
  • Cheap mobile option
  • Strong speed retention rate

CONS

  • A small number of servers
  • Doesn't work with Netflix or Hulu

So, Which Is The Best VPN Free Trial?

With plenty of decent VPN free trial options, it can be hard to choose the one that's perfect for you. To help you with your decision, though, below we'll explore the highlights of all four VPNs in more detail:

  • TorGuard is best for VPN users that want a robust no-log policy and torrent support.
  • ProtonVPN is best for VPN users that value data security.
  • VyprVPN is best for VPN users that value performance and IP address quantity.
  • AvastVPN is best for VPN users looking for a cheap mobile VPN.

Researching VPNs isn't easy - but I take a comprehensive approach to finding the best VPNs in the industry. Every single one of the VPNs on the list went through my checkup, and check all of these boxes:

  1. They are all high-performing platforms.
  2. All of them offer genuine free trials - and fully document what they offer.
  3. The servers of all these free trial options retain most of the original data download speed.
  4. They have no reported hacking accidents, revealing the sensitive user information.

By incorporating the above steps in the decision-making process, I can provide solid recommendations on the best VPNs with free trials. And this is how this list was born.
