Top 5 Cheap Linux VPS Hosts: Quality for Less
2019 March 5th at 4:21
Founded in 1991, the Linux open source software system is older than most millennials. However, continued development means that it still offers a reliable hosting environment today. Linux servers commonly use a shared hosting architecture, but there are some big advantages to opting for a VPS server instead.
And since VPS means server resources are isolated from other users, this results in more reliability and faster load speeds. Now, let's have a look at the ways of getting all that - while keeping costs affordable.
Over the past six months, I've reviewed the packages of over 40 web hosts. Today, I'm here to present you with the five best cheap Linux VPS hosting options.
In no fixed order, they are:
- Hostinger (Cheapest on the list)
- A2 Hosting (Eco-friendly and cheap Linux VPS)
- InMotion (Speedy managed Linux servers)
- iPage (Linux hosting with free domain)
- InterServer (Cheap Linux VPS with scalable resources)
Recommended for: users who want a flexible choice of Linux systems.
Price from: $3.95/month
A key advantage of Hostinger's VPS servers is that, in just a few clicks, you can install a range of different Linux operating systems.
Options include CentOS and Ubuntu, the most popular Linux distros.
Lesser-known Linux variants such as Scientific, Open Suse, Fedora, and Debian can also be installed.
Every Hostinger VPS package comes with a dedicated IPv4 or IPv6 address. That's ideal for cheap Linux hosted eCommerce sites because dedicated IP addresses are required for the majority of payment gateways.
The cheapest Hostinger VPS package includes a single CPU core, 20GB storage, and 1TB bandwidth. It should be adequate for personal or small business sites. However, if you need more power, you can opt for up to eight processor cores for $29.95/month. The upper tier plans will be adequate for large business websites.
Lacking in Phone Support
Doesn't matter what hosting type you're opting for, customer support is essential. However, Hostinger doesn't offer phone support. Representatives are available 24/7 by live chat though and, in my Hostinger review, I found them to be responsive and friendly. Therefore, the omission of a phone line isn't a big problem.
- A wide range of Linux OS systems are supported
- 24/7 live chat support
- Choose the level of resources you need
- Data centers on three continents
- Lack of phone support
- Not all plans are affordable
2. A2 Hosting
Recommended for: users who seek environmentally friendly Linux VPS servers.
Price from: $5/month
A key advantage VPS systems have over shared hosting is that a smaller number of users share the same hardware. Unfortunately, the knock-on effect is that energy usage is also split between fewer sites, making VPS a more polluting server architecture.
With A2 Hosting, you'll avoid that additional carbon guilt because A2 Hosting offsets its server energy usage with donations to the Carbon Fund. It's also committed to recycling old server hardware.
Of course, A2 Hosting wouldn't deserve a place on this list for green credentials alone. Its unmanaged VPS plans are exceptionally cheap for the specs they offer.
The cheapest costs $5/month for 20GB storage and 2TB bandwidth. Plans scale up to $15/month for 50GB storage.
A2 Hosting is an ideal option for developer-friendly cheap Linux hosting because all unmanaged VPS plans include full system root access, allowing you to install custom server management software.
Not Ideal For Beginners
Unmanaged plans aren’t for everyone. Unlike other budget Linux VPS hosts on this list, A2 VPS servers don’t come with cPanel installed by default. It can be added to for an eye-watering $19.95/month though.
Managed A2 Hosting VPS plans are also available which offer upgraded specs and additional support. However, they don't really count as cheap Linux hosting with prices starting at $32.99/month.
- Generous bandwidth allowances
- Eco-friendly company
- 24/7 Live chat, phone and Skype support
- cPanel isn’t pre-installed with all plans
- Managed VPS plans aren’t offered at budget prices
Recommended for: users who want affordable managed VPS Linux hosting.
Price from: $19.99/month
That might seem like a lot compared to other hosts in this list. However, considering that InMotion's VPS servers are managed, it's still a bargain.
Managed VPS hosting comes with lots of benefits and is generally the right choice if you aren't very experienced. If you choose a managed package, your server will arrive ready to use with management software like cPanel pre-installed.
With InMotion, using a managed plan also means your server OS will be kept up to date, with security patches installed as soon as they become available.
The 75GB of storage space and 4TB of bandwidth that the InMotion starter plan comes with also mean it is suitable for hosting large websites that attract a lot of monthly views.
A VPS hosting architecture keeps your server more secure by isolating it from security intrusions that have affected other users on the same hardware. InMotion helps you capitalize on that benefit by offering free daily backups of your data. In the unlikely case a hack occurs, your information will be secure.
Lightning Fast VPS
With InMotion, you can also rest assured that your sites will load quickly. That's partly because you can choose a latency-reducing server location from a list of data centers spread over three continents. In my InMotion review, I experienced response times as low as 21ms.
- Managed servers
- Free daily backups
- Generous bandwidth and storage limits
- Not as cheap as competitors
- Root access not included as standard
Recommended for: those looking for an all-inclusive managed VPS hosting.
Price from: $19.99/month
Plans include access to iPage's technical support team which is available 24/7 over the phone and through live chat. When you purchase a plan, they'll help you set up your server environment exactly how you like it.
iPage's VPS packages also include a free domain for one year. That's a great money-saving feature as you won't need to purchase one through a third party service.
I particularly recommend iPage's VPS package for eCommerce websites as every plan includes a dedicated IP address. That will allow you to host a PCI-compliant payment gateway on your site, so customers know they can trust you when purchasing products.
Although iPage's VPS servers are managed, they include plenty of provisions for advanced Linux developers. Every iPage VPS server comes with Linux-friendly programming languages such as PHP5, Perl and Python pre-installed.
Only One Cheap Linux VPS Plan
iPage isn't as scalable as other hosts in this list as it only offers one cheap Linux server option at $19.99.
If 40GB storage or a 1 core CPU isn't enough for you, the only option is to upgrade to the pricey $47.99/month Business plan, which comes with 90GB of storage.
- Free year of domain registration
- Dedicated IP for eCommerce
- Multiple Linux-friendly programming languages
- Starter price more expensive than some hosts
- Only one cheap Linux hosting VPS plan
Recommended for: Users who want to customize server resources. Prices start at $6/month.
Price from: $6/month
If you're looking for flexible and scalable Linux VPS hosting, it's definitely worthy of consideration.
Instead of standard preset packages, you can use a slider to select the number of CPU cores and the amount of memory you want to be included with your cheap Linux server. Prices begin at $6/month for a single core, 30GB of SSD storage and 1TB bandwidth.
The amount of server resources isn't the only customizable option though. You can also choose a range of different Linux distros to install including Centos, Debian, and Ubuntu. The server architecture itself is also modifiable with both Hyper-V and KVM architectures on offer.
A Webuzo app installer is thrown in with every plan. It will allow you to install hundreds of different applications without using a separate control panel. The app directory includes several software packages that will dramatically enhance your Linux VPS environment, including a Linux-specific malware removal tool.
- Resources are highly scalable
- Choice of different Linux operating systems
- Select your own server architecture
- Extra apps can be installed in 1-click
- 24/7 Live chat and phone support
- Only two data centers to choose from
- VPS management requires a purchase of 4+ VPS servers
Choosing the Right Cheap Linux VPS Option
As we've seen, there are many excellent cheap Linux hosting choices. Some hosts offer better value in specific areas though, so make sure you consider your personal needs when choosing a host:
- Hostinger is best for compatibility with many Linux distros.
- A2 Hosting offers eco-friendly cheap Linux VPS.
- InMotion is ideal for rapid load times.
- iPage lets you save on domain costs.
- InterServer has highly scalable hosting resources.
These cheap Linux VPS web hosts can be split into unmanaged VPS hosts like Hostinger, A2 Hosting and InterServer, and managed server hosts like InMotion and iPage. Managed hosts are generally more expensive. But remember, if you aren't tech savvy, a managed web host will offer significantly better customer support and ease of use.
