Over recent years, thanks to CMS platforms like WordPress, Drupal, and Magento, web hosting has become more-and-more accessible and understandable even for the less technically advanced crowd.

Unfortunately, that's resulted in web hosts tailoring their services to the most common statistic - first-time users with no coding experience.

But, don't lose hope! There are still plenty of companies offering top-end web hosting for developers with features like root access and support for more coding languages than you can shake a stick at.

I've spent plenty of time to find features that enhance your programming or coding experience. Here, in no particular order, are the 5 companies offering the best web hosting for developers that I have found:

1. Hostinger

From $1.45/month

Recommended for: Developers on a budget

Best Web Hosting for Developers Hostinger PlansAs a developer, just because you have more precise and specific needs than the average hosting client, it doesn't mean you should be paying inflated prices. Hostinger is living proof that great developer hosting can be done on a budget, with its shared hosting prices begin at just $1.45/month.

Although that starter plan is limited to 10GB storage and 100GB bandwidth, it's still a decent choice for most developers. Unless you are writing code for video-playback apps, or need to handle data-heavy multimedia objects, you probably won't need a great deal of storage space.

Still, if you do need a little more room, Hostinger's premium shared plan includes unlimited storage and bandwidth and costs just $2.95/month. For development purposes, you may also want complete control of your server's software and security. In that case, I recommend you opt for one of Hostinger's extremely affordable VPS packages instead. They offer root access and begin at just $3.95/month.

Hostinger offers great guidance about how to set up different coding packages on your server. There are 300+ tutorials which tell you about the pros and cons of different development kits and provide step-by-step installation instructions.

And if that's not enough, you can contact Hostinger's customer support 24/7 by live chat. Sadly, Hostinger doesn't offer phone-in support. That's not the end of the world though; tricky developer problems are often better tackled over text anyway.

Pros

  •  Affordable developer-friendly shared and VPS plans
  •  Extremely stable hosting (near 100% uptime rate)
  •  Fast loading pages (with load times as low as 77ms)
  •  300+ Developer tutorials (text and video)
  •  24/7 Live chat support

Cons

  •  Domain and SSL certificate not included in starter plan
  •  Only one website included in starter plan

2. SiteGround

From $3.95/month

Recommended for: Great customer support

Best Web Hosting for Developers SiteGround PlansEven the most experienced developers can run into technical server side issues they need help to fix. When it comes to decent customer support that helps you address such problems, SiteGround is my provider of choice.

You can contact its tech crew 24/7 through live chat, phone, email, and tickets. And SiteGround overstaffs every support shift to prevent you from being put on hold if you call. That's right! SiteGround has a no-wait-time policy for all support calls.

But helpful support alone isn't enough to earn a place on this list. SiteGround's servers are particularly suited to developer usage. You can choose between many PHP variants and SSH & SFTP protocols come standard, ensuring your file transfers are kept private.

Prices begin at $3.95/month for 10GB of SSD storage. Though, if you want top-of-the-line development features, the $11.95/month plan is worth considering. It comes with 30GB storage and developer-friendly features like a pre-installed version of Git, which can help you keep track of your multiple file versions.

The top-end plan also comes with staging, which lets you create a copy of your live site to make edits on before pushing them to your live site.

Pros

  •  Customer support available 24/7 with no phone wait-time
  •  Choice of different PHP variants
  •  Secure file transfer protocol system
  •  Top-end plan lets you test development features before making them live
  •  Fast SSD storage

Cons

  •  No unlimited storage plans

3. Bluehost

From $2.95/month

Recommended for: Its broad range of coding languages

Best Web Hosting for Developers BlueHost PlansBluehost is a great all-around developer web host. It offers cheap hosting plans (prices begin at just $2.95/month) and compatibility with numerous coding languages.

If you use a niche coding style, there's a good chance Bluehost will support one of the tools you use. Thanks to Bluehost's CGI interface, you can access browser-based languages like ActiveX, Java or JavaScript.

Bluehost also supports open-source database languages like MySQL and PostgreSQL. But if higher-level programming languages are your area of expertise, you have the freedom to make use of Python, Perl5, and Ruby on Rails.

Of course, just supporting different languages doesn't mean much if you don't have enough hardware resources to actually use them. Fortunately, Bluehost plans include a minimum of 50GB SSD storage and unlimited bandwidth. Servers are also super reliable with a 99.9% uptime guarantee (I actually found figures closer to 100%).

And its shared hosting packages are great money-savers; the plans come with a free SSL certificate, and domain registration is included for the first year. Those are two important features that you'd often be charged extra for elsewhere!

Pros

  •  Compatible with many programming languages
  •  Reliable hosting with uptime guarantee of 99.9%
  •  Domain registration included for the first year
  • Free SSL certificate - great for security
  •  24/7 Live chat and phone support

Cons

  •  Price jump after the first term

4. 000webhost

From $0.00/month

Recommended for: Its completely free use for developers

If 000WebHost ($0.00 Web hosting, unsurprisingly) looks a little familiar to you, that's because it should. It's actually a subdivision of another host you'll find on this list: Hostinger.

So why recommend them as separate hosts? Well, I've separated them because 000WebHost offers totally free web hosting for developers. There are lots of dodgy free web hosts out there, but thanks to Hostinger's reputation, you'll know your site is in safe hands with 000WebHost.

It shares Hostinger's 99.9% uptime guarantee which is achieved partly thanks to the use of CloudLinux which partitions physical resources for usage from your virtual server. Plus, The latest version of PHP and MySQL is included with all plans along with other developer-friendly tools like Curl, GD2, Zend, and XML.

Of course, there's no such thing as a free lunch, and there are always some downsides to using a free host. A free subdomain is included, but no unique domain. With this in mind, you'll have to register a domain using another service and add it to your account. More importantly, you’ll be limited to just 1GB of storage and 10GB bandwidth. That makes 000WebHost a great tool for extremely light programming, but not a good choice for working with large datasets.

Pros

  •  Shares Hostinger's 99.9% uptime guarantee
  •  Developer friendly languages like PHP, XML, and MySQL are included
  •  Comes with a free subdomain

Cons

  •  Heavily restricted storage and bandwidth

5. InMotion Hosting

From $3.99/month

Recommended for: Amazing speeds and reliability

Best Web Hosting for Developers InMotion PlansWhen you're in the middle of a difficult programming task, there's nothing worse than a slow responding interface. That isn't something you'll experience often with InMotion Hosting though: The platform offers some of the fastest developer web hosting on the market.

Thanks to the use of SSD storage, NGINX, and advanced server caching techniques, InMotion server response times were able to drop down to 21ms in my tests. What's more, you can choose your data center location to minimize latency when you connect.

Plans begin at $3.99/month and come with unlimited storage and bandwidth. They also include a free SSL certificate and the ability to host 2 websites. As a developer, you might just want to use your server to write code, but it's nice to have the freedom to host a publicly accessible page too.

As for more developer focused features, you can program in MySQL, Ruby, PHP, PostgreSQL and more. InMotion also makes it easy to access technical hosting information and to create new user accounts.

Pros

  •  Fast servers allow quick access to development environments
  •  Customer support available 24/7
  •  Free SSL certificate to encrypt your connection
  • Unlimited storage and bandwidth
  •  A comprehensive range of programming languages

Cons

  •  Price increase after the first year

How to Pick the Best Hosting Option for Developers?

Picking between the 5 hosts I've listed above should hopefully be a little easier now. But, as always, I recommend you focus on your personal needs to help you choose:

  • Hostinger is the best for developers on a tight budget
  • SiteGround offers top-notch customer support
  • Bluehost supports a broad range of programming languages
  • 000WebHost is the choice for those wanting free web hosting for developers
  • InMotion Hosting servers have great response times

Remember, no matter how you prioritize other hosting features, it's important to ensure you pick a host that's compatible with the coding language you intend to work in.
