If you're looking for personal website hosting to help you share a unique or individual story, you may find the inexhaustible list of web hosting providers a little daunting. How can you know which is the best for personal websites?
Don't worry, I'm here to help. I've tested and reviewed dozens of hosting providers for this blog. So I've taken into consideration the cost, functionalities, and design capabilities to create a list of hosting providers you should consider using for your personal needs.
These right here are the best personal website hosting options:
- Hostinger (Very affordable and reliable)
- Wix (Includes a very design-forward website builder)
- 1&1 (Very reliable and includes a personal consultant)
- Bluehost (One of the best WordPress integrations on the market)
- SiteGround (Amazing customer support)
Price: from $1.45/month
Recommended for: those looking for incredibly affordable personal site hosting.It is fair to say that regular people don't have huge budgets when it comes to building a website. Therefore, the price of hosting should be one of the primary concerns. That's why Hostinger has earned the top spot on my list: shared hosting fees begin at an absurdly low $1.45/month.
That is a very good offer, allowing you to buy hosting for a long term, pay a relatively small sum of money and not have to worry about anything for years to come.
But low prices aren't the only ace in Hostinger's hand! A fully featured website builder is included with all plans, making life easier if you want a way to create, as well as host your personal website.
If you prefer WordPress to Hostinger's site-builder, though, you're also covered with 1-click WordPress installation. Perfect for saving valuable set-up time.
Another star feature to point out is that Hostinger's storage is all SSD based, resulting in quick load speeds (which we've tested as low as 77ms).
There are some restrictions on that starter plan: you'll only receive 100GB bandwidth and 10GB of storage, for example. Although most personal sites won't get enough visitors to exceed the bandwidth cap, if you want to host multimedia content or plan to have thousands of users in your website every day, then you might want to consider upgrading to a slightly bigger plan. Luckily, the Hostinger plan with unlimited bandwidth and storage starts at only $2.95.
- Amazingly affordable
- Almost 100% uptime
- Website builder included
- Easy WP Installation
- Bandwidth and storage caps with the cheapest plan
Price: from free
Recommended for: those looking for a fast route to a beautifully designed site.
Wix is more than a host. At heart, it's an insanely powerful site building toolbox that just happens to host your website when you've finished making it.
Choosing Wix means you'll only need one service to host and create your personal site, saving time and money.
Its famous drag-and-drop website builder comes with hundreds of templates.
They're designed to cater to all manner of sites, and the level of customization possible will make it easy to use one to tell your personal story.
I bet that has you asking how much for all of this? Well, we have good news...You can set up your website for free.
However, with the free plan storage and bandwidth are capped at 500 MB, and you'll only get a Wix sub-domain to host it all on.
But if you just want to share your personal site with family and friends, it might still be suitable.
Yet, if you do want to upload a reasonable amount of personal content, or to share your site with a wider audience, you should pick the combo $11/month plan that includes 3 GB storage and 2 GB bandwidth, plenty for most personal sites.
Note that support options are limited...
Wix's main flaw is that support isn't as readily available as other hosting services.
When you're building a website from scratch, help from professionals definitely comes in handy.
There is a fully featured Help Center and you can request a support call 5AM-5PM PST but there is no 24/7 phone or live-chat service.
- A free plan
- A lot of customization options
- Drag-and-drop site builder
- Restrictive storage and bandwidth limits
- No 24/7 phone or live-chat support
Price: from $1/month (for the first 12 months)
Recommend for: those looking for reliable hosting for large personal sites.If you want a reliable personal site, look no further than 1&1. It's a well-established company that operates over 90,000 servers worldwide.
My tests verified the consistency of its service, with only 6 minutes of downtime on average every month.
And if something does go wrong, you can rest assured you'll receive assistance. 1&1's support teams are available 24/7 by phone and live chat.
More uniquely, you'll also be assigned a personal consultant to provide answers tailored to your needs.
There are two price plans that I recommend for a personal website. The first is its $1/month (for 12 months, then $9/month) managed WordPress service which comes with 25GB storage. It's fully optimized for WordPress sites and any new WordPress updates or security features will install automatically, making this plan a great time-saver.
If safeguarding your uploaded personal content is important to you, also give some consideration to 1&1's $1/month (for 12 months, then $8/month) Business plan too. Despite the name, it's perfectly suited to host personal sites - any data you upload will be backed up daily to a completely separate data center, and you'll also get a whopping 100GB storage!
- Amazing reliability
- WordPress Optimization
- Free domain for a year
- Personal consultant
- Big price increase after the first year
Price: from $2.95/month
Recommend for: those looking for a brilliant WordPress support and integration.
Bluehost is an incredibly reliable hosting provider with a verified uptime guarantee of 99.9%.In fact, its WordPress hosting package is so good, it's actually recommended by WordPress themselves.
That's partly because Bluehost's technical team (who can be reached 24/7 by phone or live chat) will help you deal with queries specifically related to WordPress features.
And that high-quality WordPress support does not come with a matching high price tag. WP plans begin at just $2.95/month (which jumps to $7.99/month after the first term).
For that, you'll get 50GB of SSD storage and unmetered bandwidth. So, if your personal story attracts a wide audience, you won't have to worry about your speeds being slowed down after a certain number of monthly page views.
- 1-click WP installation
- Plan recommended by WordPress
- SSD storage
- Free domain and SSL certificate
- Price jumps after the first term
Price: from $3.95/month
Recommend for: those who want an amazing personal site with great technical support.
Like other providers, SiteGround has 24/7 phone and live chat support teams. But what separates SiteGround's support teams from the crowd is that they take steps like over-staffing every shift to ensure someone is always available to take your call.
SiteGrounds actually guarantees there won't be any wait time when you call! SiteGrounds also ensures live chat wait times never exceed an average of 10-minutes. I found in practice I often got responses to my questions in just 2-3 minutes - amazing!
So you know SiteGround's staff will be there to help you get set up, but are the tech specs suited to hosting personal sites? Well, with the cheapest shared hosting plan $3.95/month, you'll get a reasonable 10GB of storage and unmetered traffic.
This is more than enough for the average personal site! Do note, though, that domain registration isn't included, and costs an extra $15.95/year.
- Free daily backups
- 24/7 Phone, live chat, email and ticket support
- No phone wait time, 10-minute live chat response
- Unmetered traffic
- Domain registration not included
- Storage caps with all plans
Which Is The Best Personal Website Hosting Choice for Me?
Consider your needs when deciding which of the above 5 options best fits your needs. Here's a cheat sheet that might help:
- Hostinger offers super cheap personal hosting for small sites;
- Wix is my recommendation if you want an all-inclusive service;
- 1&1 provides reliable personal hosting and a personal consultant;
- Bluehost is my choice for top-of-the-line WordPress integration;
- SiteGround is the best host for personal sites that need amazing customer support;
Bear in mind that these are rough guides, and you don't need to limit yourself to only the plans I've recommended for each host.
If you care most about customer support, you don't have to use SiteGround. Other personal web hosts like Bluehost, 1&1 and Hostinger all have great support teams - it's just SiteGround takes it to another level by with features like waiting-time free phone calls.
