Most web hosting packages include a file transfer protocol (FTP) service. However, the quality of each FTP system varies wildly from host to host. A reliable file FTP service is vitally important if you want to get the most out of your server.
But, with hundreds of FTP hosting providers to choose from, selecting the best company can take up a large amount of your time. To assist you in your quest to find the best FTP server hosting, I’ve tried a bunch of different providers and created a list of the top 5 FTP services.
Because I know many FTP users are on a tight budget, I've been careful to select packages that offer excellent value for money. And, what's more, I've even identified a couple of excellent free FTP hosting providers. In no fixed order, the best FTP server hosting services are:
- Hostinger (Affordable FTP Hosting)
- A2 Hosting (Lightning-Fast, Ideal for Businesses)
- SiteGround (Great for Smaller Websites)
- SmartFile (Dedicated FTP Hosting Service)
- FTP Today (Great for Enterprise FTP)
Recommended for: FTP server users on a tight budget.
Price from: $0.80/month
Its starter plan comes with 10GB of storage and 100GB monthly data bandwidth.
However, if you need a little extra space, Hostinger's 'Premium Shared Hosting' package costs just $2.15/month and comes with unlimited storage.
No matter which package you choose, Hostinger will provide you with a reliable FTP service. Its servers are backed up by a 99.9% uptime guarantee, so you shouldn't have any trouble accessing your file storage system.
I personally verified that Hostinger meets this uptime rate in my Hostinger review.
All Hostinger servers come with an easy to use a drag-and-drop FTP client. However, more advanced users will be glad to hear that Hostinger also makes it easy to connect to its servers through third-party clients like FileZilla FTP.
- Incredibly affordable
- Drag-and-drop FTP client
- Easy to connect to Filezilla FTP
- 24/7 live chat support
- No phone support available
- Limited storage with the starter plan
2. A2 Hosting
Recommended for: users seeking unlimited storage and bandwidth FTP server hosting.
Price from: $3.92/month
This service provider allows unlimited storage and file transfers as well as free SSL support with all plans. On top of this, with A2 Hosting, solid-state drives (SSDs) are included at no additional cost.
A2 Hosting focuses on delivering quality security features that prevent you from falling victim to hackers.
All of its packages include HackScan Protection which blocks potential hacks before they damage your site.
Moreover, you’ll also get free KernelCare updates, a dual firewall, and protection against brute-force attacks.
The $3.92/month A2 Hosting starter plan only includes one website and five databases, so it’s not suitable for users with multiple sites. However, it's not much more expensive to upgrade to the $4.90/month 'Swift' package, which supports unlimited websites.
All A2 Hosting packages come with a graphical FTP interface which will make it easy for users who aren't tech-savvy to connect to your server. A2 Hosting a great service for developers too though, as it's possible to access any A2 Hosting server through Secure Shell (SSH).
- Unlimited storage and transfers
- Free SSD and SSL
- HackScan Protection and other security features
- Turbo speed boost only available on highest tier plan
- The basic plan only allows one website and five databases
Recommended for: users who need excellent backup features.
Price from: $3.95/month
Its packages include a free drag-and-drop website builder which is great for FTP users who want to build a website for the first time.
All SiteGround packages include free daily backups. This means your information will be protected even if your server experiences a hardware failure or hacking attack.
What's more, SiteGround stands out thanks to its stellar customer support.
It's available 24/7 over the phone or through a live chat service. The company overstaffs every support shift, allowing it to enforce a 'no wait time' phone policy.
With all SiteGround plans, you can connect to your hosting account through any FTP client you choose. The base $3.95/month 'StartUp' package allows you to manage one website and includes 10GB of storage space along with a free SSL certificate.
Unfortunately, no unlimited storage plans are available, so this company isn't ideal for users who need to handle a huge amount of data. Furthermore, SiteGround doesn't offer free site transfers with its starter plan.
- Website builder included
- Daily backups
- Excellent customer support
- Use any FTP client you like
- No unlimited storage available
- Free site transfer only available in second-tier plan and up
Recommended for: users looking for a dedicated FTP hosting service.
Price from: $6/month (per user)
SmartFile is something different. It's a dedicated FTP file hosting service, designed to allow businesses to share files with employees.
SmartFile is known for delivering powerful FTP server hosting to companies that need to meet enhanced security and compliance requirements.
This provider uses standards such as SSH File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) to guarantee data security. It also provides HIPAA compliant activity logs, which are legally required if intend to handle sensitive health information.
In addition to the above, SmartFile also allows an unlimited number of simultaneous connections to its FTP servers. That means it's great for sharing files between large teams.
You can also set up email notifications, create a custom-branded web portal, and use an Outlook plugin for easy file sharing.
SmartFile is available for Mac and Windows operating systems and through the cloud. However, companies running Linux won’t be able to use this FTP hosting service.
Furthermore, the platform’s user interface is not always intuitive, so companies may have to spend a large amount of time training team members on how to use it.
- Activity logs are HIPAA Compliant
- SFTP support for security
- Unlimited simultaneous connections
- MS Outlook plugin
- Custom-branded web portal
- Not available for Linux
- The user interface isn't intuitive
5. FTP Today
Recommended for: large companies needing top-notch encryption.
Price from: $8,100/year (yes, really)
FTP Today specializes in delivering superb FTP hosting for large corporations and enterprises. Its storage allowance starts at a hefty 250GB, and all FTP Today plans include unlimited connections, users, and bandwidth.
This provider also allows unlimited file sizes, custom domains, and offers customers a free dedicated IP address. Note that dedicated IP addresses are incredibly important for security.
FTP Today offers other free security features too, including FIPS 140-2 Cipher Enforcement and at-rest encryption.
FTP Today also allows you to restrict file access depending on the country of the users.
Unfortunately, FTP Today plans cost at least $8,100/year. That means this service won't be a viable option for personal or small business FTP hosting.
Another issue with FTP today is the fact that it doesn't allow anonymous FTP usage.
- Unlimited number of users, connections, and bandwidth allocation
- Dedicated IP address
- Password enforcement and country access restrictions
- High price point, not suitable for personal use
- No anonymous FTP
Finding the Best FTP Server Hosting For You
To identify which of these five services is the most appropriate FTP service for you, I recommend that you keep your traffic volume, storage and security needs in mind while choosing. Here are my recommendations:
- Hostinger is excellent if you're on a tight budget.
- A2 Hosting is a great choice for unlimited storage and bandwidth.
- SiteGround has the best FTP hosting customer support.
- SmartFile is the best choice for organizations which require top-notch security.
- FTP Today is a great pick for large enterprises.
FTP is an extremely reliable way to transfer data to and from servers. However, it lacks some of the convenience of more modern cloud storage solutions. If you are willing to a pay for a premium service, check out my favorite cloud storage providers.
