There are tons of different website builders out there but they all have the same end goal in mind: To make building an attractive website easier than coding one.
However, some website builders achieve this much better than others.
That's why I have tried and tested the ease of use, feature set, theme selection and customization options of a ton of different website builders - to help find the perfect choice for you.
So, to help you get on your way - here are the top five free website builder software options:
- Ucraft: Free Custom Domain Support
- Webflow: Free Website Builder Software For Developers
- Wix: Great Template Selection
- Weebly: Easy to Use
- GoCentral: AI Website Design

Recommended for: users who want free website software that lets them connect a custom domain.
Ucraft is known for its flexible template designs. No matter what kind of website you want to create, you'll find an appropriate Ucraft template. Designs for everything from arty portfolio blogs to serious business sites are available.
But perhaps Ucraft's best selling point is that it allows you to connect a custom domain to your site for free. You won't find this feature with many other website creation software packages. Obviously, a real website address looks far better than a plain old subdomain.
A lot is included with the free Ucraft website building package. You can create an unlimited number of pages, for example. That's excellent if you have a large amount of content to share.
Thanks to its intuitive interface, finding the right template for your site and editing it is very straightforward with Ucraft. This is an excellent service to consider if you aren't tech-savvy.
One issue to note is that Ucraft places a fairly obtrusive banner at the bottom of every free website. If that's a dealbreaker for you, you can upgrade to the $10/month 'Pro Website' package. Doing so will remove all Ucraft branding from your site, and allow you to create eCommerce stores.
- High-quality templates
- Easy to use
- Unlimited pages
- Custom domain support
- Ugly Ucraft ads placed on every free website
- No free eCommerce support
There's a forever free plan

A design tool, a CMS, and a hosting service all in one, Webflow is a step up from regular website builders.
Fully focused on building extensive, beautiful websites, it's a great tool for those who need more than a simple informational page.
There are loads of great things you can do.
For example, you can link the page's movement and animations to the cursor position of your visitors, and create 3D animations - all without writing a single line of code. And if you wish to edit code, well, you can. The code generated by Webflow will be clean, easy to edit, and group.
And overall, during our Webflow review, we were more than impressed by what can it do. It's like using an Adobe product!
So, go figure - it's not as easy to use as many regular website builders. But for professional developers, Webflow is many times more rewarding. And the best part is - there's a forever free plan, that you can use to download the product, put it on your server, and give it a spin.
But if you're looking for an all-in-one solution, Webflow also has several plans, including hosting, CDN, and many features, perfect for businesses and website developers.
All in all, Webflow is a great free website builder software option. It's a great product that can help you make beautiful things - easily. And while there's a learning curve, it's really worth it.
- Loads of extensive features
- Perfect for developers
- Many pre-built components
- A serious learning curve
- Getting a website online requires a hosting account

Recommended for: users who want a drag and drop website builder with plenty of stunning templates.
Wix is one of the most popular pieces of website building software, with well over 1 million users worldwide. There are two main reasons as to why this platform is such a hit, though. The first is its user-friendly interface (which is well suited for website building newbies), while the second is its oh so famous drag and drop editor.
Wix also offers something called the 'Wix ADI', which is a piece of website building software that can actually build your website for you. It does this by gathering information from a series of content and business based questions, and as a result, a unique and personal website to suit your business or brand.
At the other end of the spectrum - there is also the option to design your website using Wix code. This feature provides the user with advanced capabilities and a unique content management software - but be warned, this isn't for those of you who are just getting started out.
In addition to these design features, Wix includes:
- Wix photography - This is a great way to display images, videos or text in over 30 galleries.
- Wix blog - A great feature for interacting with your visitors and showcasing new projects.
- Wix music - Showcase your new releases and sell albums online.
- Wix stores - Gives you the option to sell physical and digital products from your website.
Is Wix The Biggest Nerd Of Them All?
The Wix app store is another impressive feature that I'd like to touch on, as it's a great way to add that extra 'kick' to your website.
The app store is home to thousands of apps that are easily integrable to your website. The most popular apps are things such as Wix Pro Gallery, Wix Chat, Online Store, iPlayer HD, and many more.
In addition to the Wix free plan, there are a number of paid plans that range from $5 - $35/month.
The Unlimited plan is the one I would recommend, it's $14.00/month and includes 10GB storage, free domain for 1-year, an ad-free site, site builder app, and form builder app (worth $60.00 each).
- All-around website builder
- Wix ADI technology
- 24/7 customer support
- Drag and drop editor
- The free plan is limited
- Unable to swap templates once you have built your website

Weebly's What You See is What You Get (WYSIWYG) editor offers some of the latest technology within website building and has become a popular choice among users looking for a simplistic approach. You build up the content and layout of your website using its drag and drop editor.
This way of website building is perfect for inexperienced website builders. And what's more, users have free rein of over 300 templates to choose from - each in their deserved category.
Once you have the foundation of your website built, you can add things like video backgrounds, parallax and reveal animation effects, audio, custom fonts, and many more eye-catching features.
But What About Weebly Pricing?
Weebly offers a totally free plan. Several paid packages are also available, they range from $8 - $38/month.
I would recommend the $12.00/month Pro plan as it includes unlimited storage, video backgrounds, HD audio & video, and a free domain. Personally, I think this is one of the best value for money plans available.
- Simple to use editor
- Chat and email support
- Parallax and video backgrounds
- Intuitive interface for newbies
- The free plan is limited
- Design features are limited

But back to the building software - GoCentral provides users with a large selection of templates, each of which is fully responsive and translates well to almost any device. And although these templates aren't the best out the bunch, they are still clean and fresh.
Once you have chosen your theme, it's time to customize it - this is where GoCentral shines, thanks to its simple and easy to use editor. To build your website, GoCentral uses a swipe-to-style editor, which is just like the traditional drag and drop.
Once inside the editor, you can edit your theme's color scheme, fonts, images etc. In addition to this, GoCentral provides you with blank pages that can be filled with content and titled accordingly. You can also mix and match content blocks to give your website a unique design.
As you can see, there's huge potential in GoCentral for building a modern website for your business or individual project. But before you decide - let's take a look at its pricing.
Unfortunately, GoCentral doesn't offer free website building and hosting. However, you can create a website completely free of charge. Furthermore, GoDaddy offers a 14-day free trial which allows you to test out the hosting aspect of the service without committing to a contract.
If you like what you see, then you can switch to a paid plan which costs between $5.99 and $29.99/month. The most popular plan is the Business plan. I recommend it because it includes 24//7 support, SEO, PayPal buttons and responsive mobile design.
So, Which Is The Best Free Website Builder Software Package?
Out of the four website builders I have tested, I was most impressed with Wix and Ucraft. However, to help you make a decision, I have created a list of what (I believe) each of them does the best:
- Ucraft is a great choice if you already own a custom domain
- Wix offers lots of freedom to design your website in your own style
- Webflow great for prototypes and building smaller sites
- Weebly would make a good choice for users who want the friendliest interface with a drag and drop builder
- GoCentral is suited for users who want to build their website from pre-built elements
Weebly is still the most user-friendly website builder there is; there's no denying that its drag and drop builder is a great piece of website building software.
Ucraft stands out thanks to its free support for custom domains. And as for Wix, the sheer versatility of this product never ceases to amaze me. Wix produces some of the best website building software available today.
