For kids growing up today, learning how to use technical pieces of software like website builders could be a great way to set themselves up for adult life.

And fortunately, due to the growth of technology, there are now multiple website builders that are extremely user-friendly, safe to use and cheap. Building a website doesn't have to be an expensive and stressful task, and it's a skill that can be learned by almost anyone.

With that being said, though, you still need to choose a platform to get started with.

After checking all of the main contenders, I've come up with a list of options. All of these picks right here can be the best website builder for kids:

  • Wix (Great for beginners, includes a lot of beautiful templates)
  • uKit (An extensive but simple visual editor interface)
  • Weebly (Very user-friendly drag-and-drop experience)
  • Jimdo (Flexible website builder with a range of modern themes)

1. Wix

Recommended for: Those who want a cheap and cheerful website building process.

Wix is one of the most user-friendly and straightforward website builders to use. Its simple website building tools and colorful templates make it a great choice for kids.

There are two ways to build a website with Wix. The first option is the more hands-on approach - you can choose from one of its themes, and then customize its layout and design using its simple drag-and-drop editor. There are a number of appealing themes to choose from, as well as a vibrant and eye-catching color pallet to truly make it your own.

The second option is to take advantage of the Wix ADI (Artificial Design Intelligence) feature, which builds a website for you - this, as you can probably guess, makes the website building process easier than ever. Wix does this by gathering information from a series of content-based questions, and then applies a layout (which can be edited) that it thinks will suit you the best.

As aforementioned, the editor itself is simple and fun to use, and by dragging and dropping elements to your web page, you can easily create a custom layout and design.

This is a visual, creative and game-like way to make a web site for kids.

This is also a good website maker for kids, because of how much it relies on visuals.

The Wix galleries feature has plenty of preloaded safe-for-kids pictures, and new ones can be uploaded and displayed in just a few clicks.

What's more, Wix also offers a free plan with premium support and a free Wix domain (but be warned, your website will have adverts). In addition this, there are five paid plans which start from $11 per month.

PROS

  • Simple to use drag-and-drop editor
  • Free plan available
  • Great educational templates
  • Excellent customer support

CONS

  • Lack of non-educational kids templates

2. uKit

Recommended for: Those looking for a simple and straightforward editor.

uKit has a complete What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get editor, which makes it a great website builder for kids and adults with no experience or technical knowledge. What this means is that all of the edits you make will be visible to you whilst you're in the editor mode.

You'll also be glad to know that there are over 200 templates to choose from, and you can switch between them at any time.

With uKit, all of your website's customization is done using a drag-and-drop editor, while your text is editable just like any regular word processor. And adding things like content blocks, images and widgets are extremely simple, with no previous experience in website building required.

uKit is also fully responsive, which means that your website will look great and perform well on almost any device.

Like Wix, uKit is a great choice for users who want a good-looking website, but may also require a helping hand to achieve it.

Unfortunately, however, there is no free plan - and the price plans start at $4.00 per month.

PROS

  • WYSIWYG editor
  • 200+ templates
  • Social media integrations

CONS

  • No free plan available
  • Live chat support is excluded from the starter plan

3. Weebly

Recommended for: Beginners that want to build an educational website for free.

Next on my list is Weebly - a website builder that's highly known for its simplicity and ease-of-use. But the main reason it made my list is because it also offers an excellent free educational tool that can be used to create classroom websites, student e-portfolios and more.

In total, there are over 100 themes to choose from, and all of which are fully-responsive. Unfortunately, there aren't too many themes designed specifically for kids websites, however, under the 'blog' and 'personal' categories, there are a number of themes with simple layouts and appealing color pallets that will do just fine.

The Weebly educational tool uses the same drag-and-drop editor for creating any other Weebly website - it's super straightforward and no HTML or technical knowledge is required. And it's a great tool to learn website development.

There are also features that allow you to do things like password protect student websites, and control which websites are public or private.

There is also an included flexible blogging feature, which can be used to post class updates and homework assignments and can also be a great tool for kids to express their thoughts and receive feedback.

Therefore, this is also a great tool for teachers looking to teach their pupils the basics of website development.

PROS

  • Educational tool for kids
  • No technical knowledge or skill needed
  • Drag-and-drop editor

CONS

  • Lack of templates designed specifically for kids

4. Jimdo

Recommended for: Users who want a flexible website builder with modern templates

In recent years, Jimdo has become more and more popular and has now created over 20 million websites! One of the reasons this platform has become so popular is because almost anybody can use it. Plus, similarly to Wix, Jimdo uses the power of Artificial Intelligence to deliver a fully-personalized website with a quick turnaround.

Signing up with Jimdo is a breeze and no payment card is required. Its homepage states that it takes just three minutes to build your website, however, when I tested the AI features, it took me around 30 minutes until I was completely happy with how my website looked.

Jimdo provides a good selection of themes - all of which are mobile-responsive and look great on smaller devices. So, if you opt for the more hands-on approach to building your website, you can use these themes with the flexible content blocks to create the perfect layout and design for your website.

Playing around with these content blocks would be a great website building practice for kids.

And out of all the builders in my list, Jimdo has one of the better blogging platforms with the option to post text, videos, images, sharing buttons and more.

The only downside with Jimdo is the pricing. While it does have a limited free plan, there is a significant jump to the lowest tier paid plan, which costs $9.00/month. And while this includes an ad-free website, 5GB storage, and premium support, it's still rather costly when compared to the other providers listed above.

PROS

  • AI technology for an easier site building experience
  • Flexible content blocks and modern templates
  • Free plan available

CONS

  • The base plan is costly
  • Customer support is slow to respond
